The views were great but the cramped nature of the 4 seat(including the pilot) helicopter made it very unsuitable for photography. The pilot was not too animated; it was obviosly a "job" for him.
I would do it again, probably with Blue Hawaiian and would only go if I could have the front seat by the pilot. Photos are that important to me!

As photographers this was the only company we could find that would fly doors off over the lava fields and as it entered the ocean. I have nothing but praise for the company and the operation. Rich our pilot was knowledgeable and gave us plenty of opportunities to take images from both sides of the chopper, and angling each side down to maximize our view. On ground staff were excellent with regards to safety and organization. Doors off is the only way to photograph seriously having flown previously in other choppers where the reflections off the glass can make it time consuming to edit in post processing.

The views of the waterfalls on the way back to Hilo were also spectacular, although for us we would have preferred more time over the lava as waterfalls are better photographed with slower shutter speeds.

Overall highly recommended for both the doors off experience and the company.

It is expensive. It is a "roll of the dice" as to what you will see. We put up the money and took our party of 4 on a doors off flight. It was the most amazing sights I have ever seen. We saw multiple areas of lava into the pacific and a bubbling lake of lava. They can't fly over the main caldera so don't expect it. It is cold and windy so long pants and a jacket or hoodie are recommended. No hats. They have locked secure storage for everything in your pockets. Make certain you have the strap on your camera and enjoy. I'm extremely happy I did it and Paradise treated us fabulously. It's expensive and risky as to what you will see, but the return can be unbelievable.

Don't come expecting a National Geographic lava spectacular; what's so impressive about touring by helicopter is how massive these volcanoes are and how desolate the lava fields can be. Also, be prepared, you're at the mercy of the Volcano Gods; two days before our tour the lava stopped flowing into the ocean. But you can feel the heat; even as far in the air as we were you could feel the heat and there was red-hot lava at the vent, a spectacular view along the sea-coast and steam vents everywhere. The staff at Paradise Helicopters are friendly and the pilots (we had Joyce) are experienced and very professional. Go prepared; a good windbreaker with a long sleeved shirt - it's cold at altitude. With the doors off, you can expect that your photos will be a lot clearer than trying to photograph through perspex (or whatever clear material they use these days); our photos tell us that the trip was worth it.
