This is better than the tubes on the Volcano. We went to the left (at the bottom of the stairs.) This place is a treasure. Bring flashlights--you're gonna need 'em.

be prepared with a bright flashlight, tennis shoes, and a first aid kit. I had a 13 year old and 6 year old, who both thought the cave was awesome but it is very rocky and the ground is not smooth, making it a little hard if you don't have proper lighting. My 6 year old fell inside on the lava rock and hurt her knee pretty bad. We forgot the first aid kit so she had to tough up and walk all the way back. If she wouldn't have fallen, we wouldve gone further it was very very cool. Definately beats the Thurston lava tube.

You thought Thurston Lava Tube visit was cool... well, this is a fun cave for the locals and the novice family... Not as easy as Thurston, but more adventurous and only slightly harder to traverse inside. It is fun for ages 9-77. It is not cold, nor dangerous. Not bats, rats, snakes, nor bugs...just YOU and a few drops of water.
Lava is like ceramic. A ceramic tube is like a giant irrigation cement pipe. Solid; with no chance of cave-ins.
So, if you want to impress your kids and relatives (mothers are less interested; their imagination is in overload), take them as far as you can easily turn around. We went for more than 1000ft, and realized our wives are waiting in the parking lot, and we lost track of time... were they P.O.d ! Here we are, 2 adults, amazed at the turns and halls, and amazing red glaze coating the walls half way up, with initials scratched into the surface from 1927... we could have gone farther, but 30min one way got us into trouble. Next time for sure.
The floor of this Tube had sunk 3-4 ft long time ago, so, you have to watch where you step in some areas. Ceramic edges are not forgiving; especially from the ceiling.
Wear a hat, tennis shoes, and a good flash light. Some areas will have water dripping here and there.
We had a blast, exploring this one (a 63 and a 40yr old acting like 12yr olds) - WOW (photos to follow).
This is in a residential area, ~3mi east of Hilo, near the Sadlleback road. No tour busses here. Have fun :)
