Owner description: Come & see lava up close & personal with experienced hawaii volcanologist! Aloha! Mahalo for choosing ‘ahiu hawaii for your real lava adventure!! We have two different tour times. One at 9:00am and the other at 4:00pm. The price is $137 per person, which we provide a backpack, snacks, water, headlamps, backup headlamps, gloves and also a stick to walk with but also to interact with the lava! We hope you care about your safety. Cause your safety is our #1 priority! Our tour groups are small which we never book no more than 10people per tour guide for safety and personalism. Plus all of our guides know what's going on about the lava and will safely get you there! The hike distance to the lava changes from day to day.

Amazing tour through the rain forest into the lava field where you see lava up close and experience the heat! Take marshmallows and roast them by the lava!

went on the lava tour and it was a great hike and the view at the end was amazing! Got to go right up to the lava, I live in hilo and haven't been able to do that in a while. Very worth it and I would definitely reccomend/do more tours with them in the future

Walk through 3 miles of ankle to thigh deep mud, over trees and boulders the whole way. I am very fit but this was TOUGH. Be prepared to loose a toenail or 2! Take their backpacks as they will get mud on them, in fact, everything will get mud on it. My backpack melted when I sat it down on the edge of the lava fields on 5 day old flow to change to hicking boots (I wore reef boots through the mud - lighter). Suggest long pants as you will get cuts and scratches all over your legs from the tree branches and the lava is hot and like glass if you were to fall whilst out on the lava field. I read the reviews and took one of the walking sticks at the beginning of the trail which was a real help in giving a bit of extra stability and determining depth of mud.

Once you get there it is fantastic - everywhere lava flows for as far as you can see so have your camera ready. You do get to poke the stick in the lava which is fascinating as it is a lot thicker than I imagined it to be. It is definitely worth the effort if you are wanting to get as close to the lava as possible.

This is definitely not for the feint hearted though! Our tour lasted 7 hours and we did each way in about 1.5 hours. One group was 13 hours getting back at 3 am we were told after a 12pm start. We wanted to do the evening viewing of the lava however could not due to booked out on the days we wanted to go - really pleased that we did not do that evening tour though as trekking back in the dark through the rainforest and mud would be hard (headlights are provided).

I found that the water and snacks provided were sufficient - it is humid out there however so be prepared to carry more if you need it.

Enjoyed it a lot.

This hike is a long one. It is not for the faint at heart. We set out with 13 travellers and 2 had to turn back about 1/3 of the way. It is a lot of hard hiking and you do get very dirty. Advice from me, just get dirty and don't worry about it, it will save a lot of energy for on your way back. We also just went out and got cheap runners at Kmart and pants and just threw them away. The lava fields were amazing. We were able to get up very close and personal. It was worth the hike.

The Lava-Flows we're a Highlight of our vacation. But be aware, it's an exhausting 2-3 hour hike for experienced hikers and you'll get dirty.
Our tour guide Alex gave a lot of Information during the hike and the time on the Lava fields, he also told some fun stories of other groups he guided.
If possible rent some shoes at the Office. Totally worth it.
