“A piece of history”
Reviewed July 8, 2014

Museum had a movie with actual survivors of the Hilo tsunami which was fascinating. Lots of stories, news clippings, before and after photos. Take time to read the stories. The location faces Hilo bay, so you get an appreciation of the damage.

“Pricey for what you get”
Reviewed July 6, 2014 via mobile

This is a small museum with some info on many tsunamis from around the world. There were a few cool artifacts, lots of photo displays, and one interactive wave model. Probably about 30-45 minutes worth of browsing.

We arrived at opening time, and got a guided group tour of the photos and artifacts from the Tsunami. It was really fascinating!

“Not sure I'd do it again”
Reviewed June 4, 2014

We visited the Pacific Tsunami Museum while in Hilo. It's very easy to find - right in the heart of downtown. They offer a student discount of $4/each which was helpful since we had our two teens with us. They suggest you start with their video. It's about 20 minutes. Then you can walk through a series of rooms to get an idea of the destruction caused by tsunamis throughout the world. It was informative, but our teens were bored after about 30 minutes. It is a lot of reading. If it had been just my husband and me, this might have been better. But the teens got restless.

“Informative but rather small”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

Had an hour to kill so I walked over to the museum. Boy, I needed more than an hour to see and hear everything - from the great Tsunamis of 1946 and 1960 in Hawaii to the latest ones in Indonesia (2004) and Japan (2011). You hear about them in the news - but here you have real stories from survivors. Very nice.
