Be sure to see the movie, as it has information not covered in the exhibits. Some interesting and moving stuff here, but not a clear flow/storyline. We spent under an hour here.

We visitied the museum after spending some time at Laupahoehoe Beach Park where some of the tragedy played out during the 1946 tsunami.

It is a really well configured and regularly updated tour led by local narrators that leaves you in no doubt of the power of the ocean. The building housing it is also very cool with the video theatre housed in the bands vault.

This is not to be missed if you have be moved by the recent tsunami events in Japan and the Pacific. It was made all the more poiniant when on our last night on the island there was a full scale tsunami alert accross the pacific and we heard and saw the evacuation process for real!

One can hardly imagine the power of a wall of water when it is created by an earthquake and travels thousands of miles and hits land. The Center offers very good explanations of how this happens as well as pictures that illustrate just how powerful the waves can be, especially during the 1946 Hilo wave.

We thought this little museum would be mildly interesting and take a half hour. We ended up spending 2.5 hours here and enjoyed every minute of it. Volunteers were available to explain several of the exhibits and a very interesting and moving film is shown. They have done an excellent job explaining how tsunamis occur and the devastation they cause, both financially and emotionally.

Good film presentation on Tsunami in Hilo. Admission feeis a little high but it's worth a visit if you have a few extra dollars while on vacation.
