“Very affordable, clean, questionable location”
Reviewed June 22, 2012

I think 3.5 stars would be the best rating. I wouldn't call it very good or average. It was a good place to stay. Pakalana Inn is updated, cute bathroom with dedicated toilet area (though the shower is less than practical getting in and out and water kept getting onto the floor). The wifi was easy to log in to. The location was very accessible. This is a no frills place, that is convenient and easy to stay in. Having a code to get in was kind of fun. My husband and I needed a place to stay the night before our flight (airport is just a couple of miles away). This was it.

So yes, 3.5 stars.

Now for the negative: the area is a little scary at night. There is NO dedicated parking (don't park in the back in the weedy lot). It is not well lit. We got a little lost trying to find the hotel after we parked our car when we got back from dinner. Downtown Hilo looks very different at night.

If you are looking for a nice stopover place, convenient, easy to get to, easy to use, this place is for you. Just realize that the area/parking is a little questionable.

We visited in March and absolutely loved it. It is right near the farmer's market and within walking distance of everything downtown. We arrived at night and were a bit thrown off at first because the area was a little bit scary, but it turned out to be absolutely beautiful the next day and everything we could have wanted.

Downtown Hilo is just that. A busy Pacific rim city, with the cultural accouterments one would expect from the 2nd largest city in Hawaii. Traveler's who don't understand that and instead are chasing the lush tropical dream may need to look elsewhere for their accommodations but if access to action is your goal, the well appointed newly remodeled rooms are easily the best value on the Windward side. The Inn's location is perfect for anyone who wants to be able to walk to the scene and the beds in both the rooms that I have had the pleasure to stay in have cradled me into delicious oblivion after a night of revelry leaving me both ready and refreshed to start the new day.

Best location if you want to be directly in town. Stayed here a couple of times, no hassle be-on-your-way style digs. Pleased with the accommodations, pretty much what other folks say. Great for a few nights, next to all the restaurants, theaters, and grocers. Comfortable traveler lodgings. Unobstructed 50 ft walk into farmer's market, literally next-door. These guys lucked out sharing the same building, another winner was the unaffiliated cafe/kitchen, Paul's Place, that had opened not long ago on the first floor. The man behind the menu makes a mean and healthier breakfast or lunch, space is limited 4 tables but the food is flying out the door! Lox and bagels, waffles, granola with local honey, a salad of alternating slices of mouth-watering mozzarella& tomato or fresh ahi sandwich with wasabi coleslaw. Nachos! Sorry, there's some great food in hilo, but I caught myself thinking about this joint when eating at 2 other places. Naturally friendly and professional, the chef sets a comfortable atmosphere. Too bad no dinner or BYOB.

This is a great little hotel which doesn't look like much from the outside but has been redone on the inside very nicely. Still needs some work-the old fashioned bath made into a shower looks sweet but not practical and would be horrible for an elderly couple. Better if just put modern shower in. Window needed replacing or repair screen. Otherwise the room was great with a little kitchen area (drawers need handles) to prepare snack or breakfast. Fabulous location in the middle of town so walking distance to shops, market and restaurants. Owner was extremely nice and accommodating.

Room Tip: If you're older, check with owner about bath/shower.

I wanted to love this quaint inn, but alas, it wasn't in the cards. Our stay started a bit rocky when our code failed to open the front door (turns out the owner was a number off). When we finally reached him, he couldn't reset it remotely and had to drive in to let us in. Really nice guy; he came back when we were gone to bring us a knife (for papayas -- 6 for $1 at the farmers market!) and a reading lamp.

The room (#1) was beautifully finished, but tiny and ... odd. There was no sink in the bathroom, only a metal one in the kitchenette area. The mirror was under the shelf, so you had to bend down to chest level if you wanted to see it. The shower was nice (large, tiled, spotless), but there were no shelves to put soap or shampoo so everything had to go on the floor.

Two windows and a ceiling fan helped with ventilation, but the traffic noise and light made it difficult to sleep with even one window partly open. The neighborhood is pretty sketchy after dark, but it's right next to the incredible Hilo farmers market. Surprisingly, no noise at all from fellow guests. Close to some great restaurants (we walked to Cafe Pesto and Lucy's Taqueria). No parking, but spots were available on nearby streets.
