Nice falls but not sure why there was a charge. The payment system was very inefficient. Waited longer in line than the time to view the falls.

We walked the loop trail. It is paved with lots of stairs. A very nice walk in a rainforest, it was hot and humid. The loop trail is not as busy as the section that you can walk just up and back to the falls. There is another falls on the loop trail but the view is not good because you are looking through the trees at a sidewise view. We enjoyed experiencing the rainforest and it’s sights and sounds.

If you're looking for a great view and super high waterfall, this is the park to go to.

There's a fee of $1/person or if you park in the lot it's $5/car of people. There aren't a ton of spots in the lot, so you may be stuck waiting for someone to leave.

They have restrooms right when you arrive as well, but no place to buy water or fill your water bottle, so stock up on town before driving up.

It's a short walk to see both falls (Akaka & Kahuna), you can easily get thru in 30 min if it's not busy and you don't take much time to look around besides photos.

We were greeted by a very pleasant young man who explained the options for walking down to view the waterfall. There's a very quick route and a longer - but only about 15-20 minutes - way to go. Either is fine, just depends how you are feeling. But the point is the falls, which are so beautiful, and the sound of the water is lovely. Along the path there are diverse flowering shrubs, vines, trees - and many birds; it seems as if someone has planted and maintained a magnificent tropical garden. At the falls there are interesting placards describing some of the natural history of the falls and explaining the size in relation to other famous sites. Very worthwhile.

A must see when you travel to Hilo, Hawaii.. It rained often when we were there. The whole part of this island has amazing tall trees and many roads that have like trees connected to form a tunnel. Great time just driving around and visiting all the places everyone suggested we do while in Hilo.

EVERYONE in Kona and Hilo Hawaii were aboslutely friendly, Even the homeless people were very kind to us as we pass them by.

We bought the National Park Visitors Pass which was worth our money as we got to use it often.

I would take time to read everyones reviews and decide which one you want to do on each side of the Hawaii. We spent 5 days in Kona and 3 days in Hilo.

In Kona did the Dinner Cruise Boat the day before we left. It was a the most relaxing cruise and awesome crew and Dinner as well.

It was fun trying different restaurants through out the island. We just googled what we were hungry for and hope for the best ;-)

Hawaii is never a disappointmen at the people there are absolutely friendly , kind and always helpful.

We did Kauai a few years ago and we had the best time ever there too.
Lots of hiking and it rained alot as well.
