“Must see if on the East side of the island”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 8, 2009

An easy side trip from the Hilo area, you have two options: a short trek to 'Akaka falls and a longer loop that will let you see another waterfall.

We did the short loop and Akaka falls is certainly a beautiful waterfall...very tall. There are some smaller ones before you get to it and some very interesting vegetation.

As other reviews have said, there are restrooms there. On the road leading to the highway, stop at the coffee shop/gallery for Tropical Dreams icecream and some nice prints/souvenirs as well.

“Worth the detour”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2009

It was a short ten minute drive from the main road. Then a less than ten minute walk to the falls. They are breathtaking and worth the visit. Very popular with tour buses and school groups.

“Most romantic place on earth...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 1, 2009

Its been more than 6yrs since I visited this place. I consider this the most romantic place I've ever been in my life (so far). My wife and I reached Hilo at 6am or so and took a rental car and this was our first stop. We were the only people in the falls area. We were like teen lovers all the way to the falls. The hike was nice and cool and the air was fresh and the smell of fruits and flowers added to the charm. Exotic fruits like Jackfruit and Guava were just lying there on the path to the falls. We ate Guavas on the hike.

I'm yet to see a place as romantic and beautiful as Akaka falls. Maybe it was more memorable to me because of the whole experience of the exotic serenity and nature with your loved one, but I would definitely not pass this chance if you are in the Hilo area.

“Breathtaking waterfalls! Very impressive and accessible”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2009

We visited the big island and stayed in Waikoloa. Nearly everyday, we took our rented car out to see the sights that Hawaii had to offer. One day we made the trip from the west coast through Waimea to the East coast, and it was incredible. The drive alone is beautiful, as you travel from the dry and rocky-black terrain of one side of the island, and gradually the landscape becomes more lush and green as you approach the other side. Just beautiful!
The Akaka Falls Park was just off the main stretch of road (easy to find), and it only took us maybe 10 minutes to walk along the trail into the viewing area. The falls themselves were beautiful! I couldn't believe that we could just park our car, walk 10 minutes and see something so breathtaking!
We were able to get some really nice pictures, not only of the falls, but of the tropical foilage along the trail as well.
(Tip: If your travelling on to Hilo from Akaka falls, there is a little sign that says "Scenic Route" and "scenic point" or something along those lines - it really was Scenic, and well worth the little detour to check it out)
Don't leave the big island without checking out Akaka falls!

“Two falls for one!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 5, 2009

There are actually two waterfalls at Akaka Falls. The loop trail was partially closed while I was there, so go to both the right and the left. Off to the right is the smaller of the two falls (still a tall fall by any measure), and to the left is Akaka falls itself.

The other treat is the walk through the jungle and past small streams and tiny waterfalls on the way to the larger falls.

Akaka is near Honomu, so be sure to stop in the little historic Honomu downtown on your way out. We found snacks and nice gifts for folks back home.
