While I wouldn't drive from anywhere on the big island just to do this, if you are anywhere on the north end, Hilo, or Volcano, it makes for a good trip, you can tour both falls from the side walk circuit in about 30 min, they are both stunning. If you can't hike into the back country or take a helicopter tour to see some of the >1000 ft falls of the big island, this park gives the whole family a spectacular look at two falls (one in the 400 ft range) in a short time from a safe walking path for only a few dollars. Well worth the trip.

You get so much pay off with so little effort- it is a fairly easy circular hike on a paved trail. The scenery is beautiful. If you are In a hurry and just want to see the falls go left instead of right at the entrance. It would be a very short distance to the falls from there. We did the entire circle in less than an hour.

The falls are beautiful and the walk to them was not to bad. The only part that i personally did not like was the fact that it is in the most humid part of the island.....

There are 2 options when starting from the lookout. I suggest the "suggested route". The other takes you straight to Akaka Falls, but it is worth taking the short trip through the "jungle". Once you get to the falls, it is INCREDIBLE. Save some money tip: Park just outside the gate and only pay $1 per person. It only adds a few steps. : )

Akaka Falls looks pretty great but because of that, it is over run with people. Go later in the day to avoid most of them like we did.
