I was completely dubious when my husband booked this tour. He has been to the Big Island previously and his one regret was not doing a helicopter tour, so reluctantly I agreed to go along. With three children in tow, it was going to be an expensive 45 minutes and I couldn't really see the value. Together with a fear of flying, I was happy to sit out. Anyway, we showed up at Safari Helicopters and the wonderful lady there did our safety briefing and before you knew it we were up in the air with our pilot Kovi. It was a fantastic experience. Kovi took us down the coastline, showed us a gorgeous black sand beach then we went up to the lava flows and to the caldera. We saw red hot lava and Kovi took our helicopter so low, we had great views of everything. As a previous reviewer mentioned, the helicopter was clean, well maintained and Kovi was knowledgeable, friendly and professional. I don't regret the cost for a second. This tour was worth every cent. There are some experiences you just can't put a price on.

This tour is the only way to go if you want to see an active volcano. Though we didn't get to see a lot of red lava flowing, we did get a little peek and also the steam rising. I was surprised how close we were able to go up to the active volcano but pleased to see it up close. You really get such a view that you can't get on a walking/driving tour. The facility isn't as nice as their other location in Kauai but it's sufficient and who cares as long as their helicopters are good as well as the people (who are very nice).

Experience of a lifetime! Clean, we'll maintained, and professional. 45 minute tour was just right amount of time. They can't guarantee lava, but we got to see it! Knowledgeable and friendly pilot, Kovi made the trip fun for all!

Our party of six took the Safari Helicopter tour of the Volcano. Unfortunately, we saw very little lava - but lots of steam. The pilot/narrator (Kovi) was excellent, filling us in on numerous bits of information that made the flight very enjoyable. We got to see several waterfalls just north of Hilo which turned out to be the highlight of the tour. Sorry I didn't take the tour 8 years ago when the lava was flowing into the ocean. Now, it's flowing underground with steam being the main visual that it's there. Not worth the cost of the flight. Just to clarify,Safari was great, just nothing much to see if you're looking for lava.
