This zoo is a nice place to visit. The grounds are nicely kept up. It was enjoyable to see the animals, birds and reptiles. There is no entry fee and lots of parking. I was hoping to see the white tiger, but a fellow visitor said that it was injured. The monkeys are always delightful! Very nice to sit around the grounds, you can hear some of the birds, and the scenery is pleasant to look at.

A short drive away from the main highway between Hilo and Volcano, the zoo is forever improving. Many plant societies -- palms, orchids, bamboo, vireya rhododendron, water gardens, and so on -- volunteer their time, talent and precious plants to beautify the surroundings. No admission charge, although a donation would be a nice thing to do. It's fun to watch coins circle around and drop into one yellow container at the entry. Folding money accepted too!

I'm surprised by some of the negative reviews on this site. We went to the zoo whilst in Hilo for 24 hours and loved it. The day we went was overcast and wet so we virtually had the place to ourselves. Yes the tiger was not in his enclosure as he was injured, but if you stood at the right point of his perimeter fence you could see him, and how often do you get to see a white tiger? For free!!
The gardens around the zoo are beautiful and whilst some enclosures are a little small, they are no worse than I have seen at many other zoos which are much more hectic and busy that this one - surely a more stressful experience for the animals. I was very impressed with the variety of animals (for a free zoo, just incase you didn't pick that up!) and the grounds were very pleasant to stroll in. Not sure what other people expected, but I thought it a delight, and loved some of the more unusual creatures such as anteaters, coatis, sloths, tomato frog and the peacocks strolling around. A great day out if you have kids, or just want a chilled out place to be.

A beautiful little zoo, where all the animals seem happy and friendly. The white tiger was injured and we couldn't see him, so we were bummed about that, but the parrots were all so silly and friendly and the anteaters were lazily playing with each other. The monkeys seem calm and happy and curious.

I really wish we could have seem the tiger because his habitat was so large and beautiful and serene. What a lucky tiger. We'll come back.
