If the river has good flow it is a very impressive waterfall, if not you'll be wondering what you're doing there. There is an impressive Banyan tree just up the river a short hike that is a good place for photos. Take the walkway up the steps on the west side of the parking lot, then just follow the trail over a small ridge and there's the Banyan tree. The trail goes back to the river just past the tree to some large pools that look like local swimming holes.

Rainbow Falls is spectacular, beautiful, etc. The viewing area is a tiny parking lot jammed with an endless train of tour buses disgorging huge crowds of tourists. There is no trail or garden, just a poorly placed viewing area jammed with crowds that shove and elbow you as you try to get a glimpse of the falls. The only reason I give praise to the falls is I saw them from a helicopter.

First of all, I have been to this waterfall many times, and it depends on what time of year you go whether or not you will see the raging water that you see in many postcards and books. Last winter and during the summer it slows to a trickle (usually winter is rainier but this year Hilo had a drought). Even when it is at a trickle it is still a deep water fall with rich history. Kamehameha's father's bones are burrowed underneath the falls. There is a trail that forks off to the left of the falls and from there you can climb down on the rocks above the falls-but this is dangerous if a storm is approaching or if the waterfall has a good flow. The trail also leads to some beautiful trees that make an easy climb even for young children. If you want a to see guaranteed good waterfalls, drive further up the road and there are several other waterfalls including Boiling Pots and Pe'e Pe'e Falls (this will at least make a good photo of the name-i.e. Pee Pee Falls). Big Island Revealed has good directions to these waterfalls and many other attractions on the island. Akaka Falls always puts on a good show and is about 30 minutes north of Hilo if you really want to see something impressive!

Pretty waterfalls. Guess we were there after recent rain because the falls had a good amount of water in them. Recommended quick stop. Easy to drive to.

Rainbow Falls was our first stop on our trip to Hilo. We were promised by the AAA book that there was going to be a great spectacular fall, and rainbows. However, when we arrived the water was more of a trickle than a water fall, we also didn't see any rainbows. This does not mean you shouldn't make a stop here. We took a scenic hike down to the area of the waterfall, through the lush rainforest and did some sightseeing. I believe you have to go a certain month of the year to get a water show, and we weren't in the correct month. Overall, it's still a beautiful spot to stop by and take a quick hike.
