“Not so much water, deep fall.”
Reviewed June 17, 2009

Rainbow Falls was our first stop on our trip to Hilo. We were promised by the AAA book that there was going to be a great spectacular fall, and rainbows. However, when we arrived the water was more of a trickle than a water fall, we also didn't see any rainbows. This does not mean you shouldn't make a stop here. We took a scenic hike down to the area of the waterfall, through the lush rainforest and did some sightseeing. I believe you have to go a certain month of the year to get a water show, and we weren't in the correct month. Overall, it's still a beautiful spot to stop by and take a quick hike.

“Great stop in Hilo”
Reviewed June 1, 2009

This is a great little waterfall! I have yet to catch it with the rainbow appearing, but they say to get there early when the sun is rising. I am never there early in the morning. It is kind of in the middle of town, so it is a weird location. Easy to access, and a neat little falls. Nice parking, and a restroom available. If you can climb the steps there is a humongous banyan tree. Unbelievable, and worth the climb for the photo. Difinitely stop here on your way into Hilo

“Shouldn't waterfalls have water?”
Reviewed February 5, 2009

As others have noted, this is a very quick stop convenient to Hilo. So stop by just to see it. I stopped by two different days. There was very little water falling the first day, and almost none just a few days later. There's also no trail - just an observation platform. So you can't get a better view, a closer view, or even around into the large hollow behind the falls. At least you didn't have to drive far from downtown Hilo or hike at all to get there.

“More like Rainbow trickle”
Reviewed July 10, 2008

We stopped here as part of our cruise ship tour to the Volcanoes Nat'l Park and were informed that it has been very dry for the past few months. There was barely any water going over the falls in late June and not much else to see here. It was OK for a 15 minute tour stop, but I certainly would not go out of my way to see it.

“Nice quick stop”
Reviewed February 28, 2008

While in Hilo for part of our honeymoon, my wife and I paid a quick visit to Rainbow Falls before heading to Volcano National Park. We figured after a couple days of rain and with the sun peaking out, it would be a great time to try to visit the waterfall.

I wouldn't say we were disappointed necessarily, but it is not the best waterfall we saw on our trip. If you have a little more time I would recommend Akaka Falls north of Hilo (about a 25 min drive).

But anyway the falls gets its name from the many rainbows that form in its spray. Unfortunately with the clouds in and out we were not able to observe any rainbows. The falls were going full force though and were quite large. The Wailuku river that the falls are located in changes drastically depending on the rain, so it is probably best to go after a couple of heavy rains. Also, the falls are a major stop for Hilo bus tours, so it is very possible you may get overrun with a group of 50 people or so lugging their cameras to catch a glimpse of the falls.

All in all if you just have a few minutes to stop and peek, it is worth it, but if you are looking for a waterfall experience like no other I would try another place.
