Owner description: Waterfalls located on the big island of Hawaii.

I lived in Hilo for years, right up the road from Rainbow Falls. It's a tiny attraction, with maybe twenty car/bus stalls, a restroom, and the falls. The falls are part of the Wailuku River which originates on/near the slopes of Mauna Kea. After a hard rain, the falls can be unbelievably huge and roaring (and muddy). Try this trick: Stare at the falls in one place (try not to blink) without following the water downward for 30 seconds. Then quickly move your sight to the rock wall to the right of the falls. I won't give away what you'll see!

A beautiful falls that creates rainbows as two streams flow into the falls and create the colors. Get there in the morning for peace...

A short drive from Hilo, paved access, morning is supposed to be the best time to view rainbows. You can take a short walk to the left, up some steps,to see the top of the river, continue into the trees, they are worth the look.

If you park in the lot at Rainbow Falls you pay $5.00 per car. Outside the park you pay $1.00 a person on walking in. It is a pleasant walk up and down the stairs around Rainbow Falls. If you have any physical limitations it might not be right for you. I saw a few Seniors gasping going up the stairs. The view is worth it though. You can smell sweet White ginger in the air. One tip, wear insect spray as the mosquitoes are rampant during the afternoon.

The falls were running slow because they hadn't had rain in four days but it was still beautiful. I was unclear that you can walk right up to boiling pots from the same parking lot because I didn't see any signs. When you go up to see e boiling pots, check out the banyon tree to your left. We were told by a local man that it was planted in 1900 and it is all one big tree (huge one in the middle and a ring of smaller ones around it). I would suggest you wait to go until after a rainy day to get the full effect.
