My friends and I discovered the Hilo Bay Hale two years ago, desperately searching for a nice place to stay during the Merrie Monarch Festival 2009. We had a wonderful time there - last year and this year!
Danny and Matthew are very attentive and caring hosts. The rooms are beautifully decorated, asian style, each with a great sense for details and with an own lanai. You can even feed the kois from the lanai of the Tsunami Room. The garden around the house is so green and lush, just could just chill out at the B&B all day!
The open air breakfast is awesome - staring out with fresh gardenias on the table of the lanai next to the kitchen, great Kona coffee, loads of fresh fruit and delicious daily specials like french toast or omelettes. We really enjoyed the company of the other guests during breakfast too.
Needless to say that we are very much looking forward to come back in 2011!
Aloha & a hui hou!

We booked our 1-night stay on the fly, based on the recommendation of another innkeeper. The owners happened to be away that day, but we were charmed by their lovely hostess, Misty. We stayed in the lava room, which we found spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The bathroom in this space was very attractive; our only complaint was that perhaps a bit too much water escapes from the terrific shower, requiring a few towels on the floor. We had a delicious breakfast on the lanai before departing the next morning. The kitchen, as well as the rest of the place, is cozy, very attractive and nicely decorated. We would absolutely recommend this conveniently-located inn to anyone.

My husband and I stayed here for three nights in April and it was just lovely. The house has been restored to such a charming, cozy place and Matthew was such a nice and gracious host. Our room was large with a very large bathroom and even a closet to store our luggage. We were able to use the kitchen whenever we wanted, which was a nice plus. Enjoyed playing games on the back patio during the evening, until it got too cold. Easy walking distance to downtown. I think my only complaints were about the weather! I would definitely recommend this place over and over if you are looking for a lovely, centralized place to stay in Hilo.

We decided to spend our last day of our 9 day stay on the big island in Hilo and explore north. We spent time diving in Kona, exploring the volcano and were ready for one more day of exploring. After stopping at the MacNut co. and then of course BI candies for all our friends, we rolled up to the Hilo Bay Hale B&B. It was easy to find, closes to the center of town, but just outside enough not to be disturbed by too many people. Matthew met us at the door and was very friendly. We felt at home right away. We chose the Bay Room because it was on a side to itself, had its own porch door and bathroom. We really enjoyed our stay. We had the run of the house. They have done a really nice job of decorating. Fun little things, like a bathroom light that was blue. Their porches are comfortable and airy, the rooms clean and comfortable. The cool thing I really liked about Matthew, was that he was there when you needed him and not there when you didn’t. He seemed to show up at all the right times. We never felt pressured, or that we didn’t have our space. We also really liked its location, as after our exploration north of Hilo, we didn’t have to use our car to go into town for dinner and checking out the shops. Other Notes: Hilo is a funky town with lots of cool shops. The areas we explored really were not as good for swimming as the Kona side. Hilo would be good to stay to visit the volcano or lava flow in Puna. We ate at Ocean Sushi for lunch and Pescadore for dinner and would recommend both.

Hilo Bay Hale is a beautiful B&B providing great location, rooms and service.

Location: Two blocks walking distance from downtown Hilo.

Room: The Lava Room is stunning with it's 11 foot rain shower, volcanic stone basin, and walk out to private entrance/sitting area. The Japanese bamboo inspired decor provided a zen atmosphere.

Service: Matthew, our host, woke up early to provide a full breakfast including fresh island fruit, eggs, pastries, coffee, juice...

Don't miss the scenic drive on the way to Akaka Falls. This was an unbelievably beautiful detour.

Once you step onto the stairway leading up to the main entrance on the first floor, you know this place is special. Owners Matt and Danny have transformed an old, run-down place into an incredibly charming B&B jewel. From the little reading room at the entrance to the vintage Hawaiiana in the kitchen and the zen-like bamboo garden with koi pond the Hilo Bay Hale reflects the love and dedication that the couple has poured into the renovation. But this place is not only visually appealing: we have never felt so welcome in any of the other places we stayed at in Hawaii. There are hand-picked bananas fresh from the farm, there are rambutans and tangerines and whatever fruit is in season. The kitchen is well stocked with all supplies to cook something extraordinary while on the porch/patio there's a barbecue grill. Matt prepares a generous and delicious breakfast (between 8 and 9) and makes a point of using fresh ingredients. Danny is a movie producer and Matt used to be a interior designer for a national book chain. Both are extremely helpful and will go out of their way to make you stay enjoyable (e.g. they gave us a ride to the airport). We stayed in the Lava Room and loved it. Even if you don't stay in that particular room, ask if you can take a peek. The bathroom rivals any five-star-spa facility (without the hot tub and sauna, of course) for creativity and style.
Even though the Hilo Bay Hale is located close to a major street, we did not hear any significant car traffic out back. That might be because of the coqui frogs, though. Those buggers are all over this part of the island and turn up the volume to amazing levels at night.
That could be about the only thing that could keep you from staying in Hilo, and this B&B for that matter.
Another plus: the Hilo Bay Hale offers great multi-day-rates. And they rent out another place in Pahoa, too, in case you want to check out another part of the Big Island.
Oh, and yeah - there is a free laundry facility as well. Plus, they have a highchair and a crib for kids. WiFi Internet access, too. One more thing we liked a lot: They let you pay through PayPal, which gives you much more peace of mind than using your credit card.
All in all, this place is as close to perfection as it gets in this price/comfort category. Enjoy!

I spent 5 days in the Bay room and it was great, open windows and doors with nature singing you to sleep every night. My friends had the Tsunami room and it was even better with the private lanai, and koi pond babbling gently. Very easy to come and go, many things within walking distance, farmers market was great too!! What a wonderful way to salvage an historical building while creating a peaceful place for guests and family!!
