Aloha and thank you for your review! We are stoked that you had such a wonderful stay here at our lodge, and that you were able to take advantage of the various modes of transportation to explore our town here on the East side of the Island of Hawai‘i! Of course, being able to walk to many beautiful, nearby beaches is always a plus! We hope you had fun and that you will join us again soon! Arnott’s Lodge & Adventures is also offering a referral discount! As word-of-mouth is how most information gets passed around, refer your friends and family to stay or tour with us and we'll extend a 10% discount to them, as well as a 15% discount toward your next reservation with us. Referred guests simply need to provide your Last name and the Booking Reference Number as shown on your previous reservation. A hui hou!
Larry our driver and guide was fun and informative. Rainbow falls were gorgeous and make sure you also climb the stairs to the left of the rainbow falls lookout sign and at the top continue to the left for amazing trees and exposed roots. Lava walk was amazing with an array of colours and textures, followed by a well earned swim. After walking in the sun and humidity, the mineral pool was just what we needed. Pay your own lunch stop at macadamia factory was pleasant and a good spot for souvenirs.
Aloha and mahalo nui for taking the time to leave us a review! We are absolutely thrilled you enjoyed our Frozen Fire Excursion! We will pass along your praises to Larry! He will be happy to hear he could provide a fulfilling tour for your visit to the Island of Hawai‘i! We love the photos! They are beautiful! We hope that despite the workout that comes with that hike, you all were able to still learn a lot and that you have come to love our beautiful island and its history! Please visit us again during future travels to the Island of Hawai‘i and join us on our other amazing adventures; Mauna Kea Summit Tour and Volcano Twilight Tour! A hui hou!
This is a must see excursion that my wife and I booked on our 11 day Royal Caribbean cruise. The waterfall, lagoon, and site of the frozen fire was awesome. Low impact walking and beautiful sites. Highly recommend this tour if you can't do a lot of hiking.
Aloha and Mahalo nui for your review! We are stoked that you joined us during your time here on the Island of Hawai'i! Our Frozen Fire tour is definitely one with a lot of history. Since our little "Big Island" here in the Pacific was made of many, many years of lava flows, we are always happy to share this history with visitors from all over the world! We hope that you were able to learn a lot and that you came to love our island as much as we do! Please visit us again soon and join us on one of out other amazing adventures; Mauna Kea Summit Tour, Volcanoes National Park, and Valleys & Waterfalls. A hui hou!
My registration went quite well - changes were accommodated, helpful advices for places to see. The receptionist even gave me a walk-through of the room and facilities (which included an outdoor community lounge and a smoking area.) The staff was helpful with subsequent inquiries and booking of tour (to Mauna Kea).
The room (or rather apartment) is pretty average, with adequate budget-minded amenities (microwave and coffee maker...). Little things I was expecting were not available (such as Kleenex tissues). The air conditioner was only in the bedroom, making the living room and kitchen area somewhat too warm to feel comfortable.
The tour to Mauna Kea was a big disappointment. There was an unnecessary stop at Rainbow Falls since it cut into the time at the summit. The van stopped at the Mauna Kea Visitor Center for people to acclimate to high elevation (way too long). By the time we reached the summit area, the sun almost set, giving us about 15 minutes to take in the view before being chased out. For those taking photography seriously, this was not enough time to find a good angle and to set up to take pictures. There was mention of optional hiking to the summit but it was not allowed. The star gazing segment was also fairly boring. A few of us gave the driver/tour guide feedback to improve for future customers. There were other tour vans at the summit before we arrived, and were still there when we left. Probably better off finding a different tour elsewhere.
Aloha and Mahalo for your review. We are happy to hear that arrival to our lodge went well! We strive to have accommodating, personable staff on site to help when needed. As we are a no-frills lodge, we are equipped with the necessities of a typical traveller curing a short-term stay. Regarding the air-conditioning, as it is written on the laminated sign placed on the bed in each room, when all the windows in the suites are closed, and the bedroom doors are open, the air-conditioning sufficiently cools the entire unit. This has never been an issue before.
Regarding the tour, we advertise from the start that we make a brief stop at Rainbow falls, as well as a 30 minute acclimatization stop at the Onizuka Visitor Center. This time also allows us to meet with any guests joining our tour from the visitor center, and it allows all guests to check out what the visitor center has to offer, as well as small hikes around at that elevation, since many guests don’t have another opportunity to check out that area before heading to the summit, nor following the stargazing. As far as the time on the summit is concerned, we are always up there for 30-45 minutes. We have even confirmed with our guide that the tour was in fact on the summit for that long. While it shouldn’t take a serious photographer an hour to find the perfect shot, those photographers that want more time on the summit, and those that don’t want to participate in the other parts of the scheduled tour such as Rainbow Falls and Stargazing, we would suggest not signing up for the standard tours. Instead, drive up on your own, or schedule a private tour. We offer the option of a Private Tour, where you can customize the tour to your liking. Regarding the hike to the true summit, we have no control over that area as it is sacred Hawaiian lands, and no one is allowed to traverse it. As for the stargazing portion of the tour, sometimes astronomy isn’t interesting to everyone, however when signing up for the tour, you were aware that it was part of the package. We appreciate feedback from our guests, as it does help us to improve our accommodations and tours. We hope that you still had a comfortable stay with us, and you were able to still get some amazing shots from the top of Mauna Kea. A hui hou!
Note: my review is about a deluxe room with private bathroom and I can't speak to the other rooms offered.
I came to stay at Arnott's Lodge after discovering that the hotel that we had booked for our trip was not at all as described (LOTS of bugs/ants, dirty, poor communication, no manager or any staff on site...). Thankfully Arnott's had a room available for the duration of our time in Hilo and we were able to check in right away. The staff was incredibly friendly, accommodating, and patient as we had some other stressful travel difficulties. Shavon (sp?) in particular was wonderful. The room was exactly what we expected and needed - clean, comfortable, cool, and quiet. We were able to rent beach towels and buy bug spray at the main office - a lifesaver! The deluxe room even had complimentary coffee, which was very much appreciated. Great location as well, walking distance from a couple of public beaches. I'm so grateful that we found Arnott's and that we were able to stay there. It made our trip all the more enjoyable and relaxing. Thank you for all your help, Arnott's staff!
Aloha Madeline and mahalo for your wonderful review! We are thrilled that we could be your saving grace during your time here in Hilo! We are proud to provide clean and comfortable accommodations for all guests staying with us. This includes not just the deluxe rooms, but all of our other rooms as well! (Of course, while camping you may still get some bugs here and there. :P ) While we are a no-frills lodge, we are happy to provide not just the necessities for a comfortable stay, we aim to employ staff that will go above and beyond what is required to make sure that our guests have the most successful, adventurous visit here on the Island of Hawai'i. Siobhan is no exception to this. As we are located out of the main city center of Hilo, we stay quiet, and as you had found out, are located within walking distance of some amazing beaches!
We welcome you to stay with us again soon, and join us on our amazing tours as well: Mauna Kea Summit Tour, Volcano Twilight Tour, and Valleys & Waterfalls tour! nice welcome by Miranda - thank you; we had double room with kitchen and bathroom - comfortable and spacious with the view on the lake; nice suprise was morning wake up by geese and turkey :) ; very close 3min, is "secret" beach almost with nobody there.
Also good to visit beach with black sand - 30min walk. On Wed and Sat take a bus or hithchike to visit farmers' market in the city center. I recommend trips organised by Arnott;s.
Aloha and mahalo for leaving us a review! We are thrilled that you enjoyed your stay with us here at Arnott’s Lodge, starting from your arrival with Miranda! As our lodge is in a more residential area of Hilo, we are always entertained by the various wildlife that cruise through, such as the geese and turkey. Additionally, as we are in a quiet area of town, those nearby “secret” beaches are a blessing to not only walk to, but also provide ambient sound of crashing waves off in the distance to lull you to sleep! It sounds that you were able to visit Richardson’s Ocean Park, or local black sand beach! Were you able to snorkel and check out all the life living on the reef there? We hope you also enjoyed your visit into old downtown Hilo! Join us again during your future travels to Hilo! Arnott’s Lodge & Adventures is also offering a referral discount!
