I am writing this review from my bed at this property. I stayed here in November of 2012, and never got around to writing this. Obviously, the place is decent, cause I returned...unless I have really low standards?

Seriously, this is a nicely run, older hotel. The furnishings are tasteful and in good repair, and the place is generally clean. The AC works well in the room, the parking is free. I have never eaten at the restaurant, though.

What really impressed me the last time I stayed here was the staff. I was flying out on the red-eye on the other side of the island. I asked the staff if I could have a late check out, so I wouldn't have to spend most of my day sans lodging. They offered 4PM, no charge. I plan to return here whenever I get back to Hilo.

We went to Hilo on a weekend trip and decided to try the Seaside Hotel since it had kama'aina rates. It's an older hotel but all we needed was a place to sleep since we would be out all day doing things. The pros are it's inexpensive, rooms were clean, hotel is located in a convenient location and rooms have a mini-fridge. The restaurant next door also has a good breakfast. The cons were that the kama'aina rooms were way in the back (next to the main road) and very noisy at night and morning and there's no guaranteed parking and there is limited parking making it tough to find a spot if you get back to the hotel at night. If the hotel's not full, I don't see why they don't give kama'aina a better, i.e., quieter, room since we're more likely to be repeat customers. Uncle Billy's looks to be in a much quieter location and more parking. Next time we will try there or spring a for a B&B.

Room Tip: Try not to get the back rooms next to the main road. We heard everything, traffic of motorcycles, t...

The hotel is an older property. Housekeeping does a good job and the hotel is well maintained. If you have a car it is easier to get around. I used Hilo public transportation, which has limit service. Walking distance from the hotel is beautiful Japanese Garden, a few restaurants and stores. Front desk staff are both friendly and helpful.

The Hilo Seaside Hotel is a hidden gem in Hilo Town. From the outside you may pass it by, not expecting much. On the inside, however, the hotel is charming, well kept and richly decorated with traditional Hawaiian terraforming and artwork. A part of the first floor is built around a charming courtyard which contains the well maintained swimming pool and some of the most beautiful landscaping we have seen on the Islands. Every little corner of this part of the hotel, at least, is filled with artful terraforming of natural plants and sculptures. The rooms are not spectacular but are extremely well kept by the excellent cleaning and maintenance staff. Cable on a flat screen TV and air are included. There is a charge from a local provider for internet use in the room, but is free in the lobby area. The internet rates are not unreasonable and your purchase works in several areas on the Islands but if you choose to purchase internet access, you may miss the opportunity to sit in the lovely and comfortable lobby area. There you can choose to use your own wifi device or sit at one of several computers provided by the hotel. Best of all, this open air lobby overlooks a large, beautiful koi pond filled with colorful, fascinating fish. Okay, calling it seaside is a bit of a stretch but it is across the street from a picturesque  bay. There are a few rooms on the "noisy side" of the hotel but that just means a few heavy trucks passing on the street outside and an occasional overpass from a plane or helicopter from the nearby airport. But thist is only a few of the rooms and is extremely livable, especially considering the solicitous and efficient staff, a full free breakfast, free parking, guest laundry, and, best of all, a very reasonable room rate. Oh, and another perk is the adjoining restaurant, the Coconut Cafe, which has won many awards and offers local and mailand preferrence options. You cannot find a much better package for a base from which to explore the Big Island of Hawaii.

The hotel has so much about it that is excellent - the Liliuokalani Park and Gardens that surround it, the ocean front views. The rooms need refurbishment. As in most of Hilo, humidity is a problem. In order to avoid odors in the room we had to keep the balcony door open all the time. Odor in the hall is just a fact of life. I rate it low for that reason, but I continue to stay there and enjoy it - there is not a lot of selection in this area. Prices are variable and I would not want to stay there at the higher rates. However, I do pay the extra to get a room on the ocean side.

Room Tip: The ocean side is really awesome. The lowest floors (2-3) have the feeling that the water is just o...

Wish there was a rating between Average and Very Good. This is an old hotel, kept up the best it can be which is why I gave it the Very Good button. Got this place via an online marketer. Would stay again because it is non-pretentious and comfy.

Stayed here 4 nights, had a pleasant room, the furthest from the airport. Room had two double beds. There's not much buffering from the take-off jet noise, but it is not like you're staying near LAX or DFW, etc., so the flight noise is *occasional*. Latest take-off was about 10:40pm, earliest about 6:30am. The view was partly of the big koi pond at the ground level, the pond across the street and diagonally, of the sail boat anchorage. Free ranging ducks arrived at dawn on the last morning and the female was pretty loud with her quacking.

Had iron, ironing board, small fridge, coffee pot with coffee, hair dryer, tissues. Optional send-out profession cleaning ticket on a hanger. Nice carpet, with some underlayment issues but nothing to trip over. Pay for in-room internet, free in the lobby.

Nice small lanai (porch) outside with two plastic chairs and a table. During February, the sunrise is not into this room. There are many outside lights which are rather bright even with the light-colored drapes pulled. (I'm used to a very dark environment for sleeping.)

Due to the intense wet weather, the housekeeping staff did not follow the directions about the water conservation of used towels - hang up, use again; on floor, please clean. They would not have dried from high humidity during the rainy days so I wasn't upset with them not following the signs. There was a dark hair stuck on the wall of the bathroom, which was not removed till I nudged it. Another was found on the sink, which was a light colored one.

Some things to be aware of if needed - no elevator and there can be long walks from the lobby to the furthest rooms. The parking lots cannot handle the number of cars which hold registered guests. You can park along Kalanianaole Street - both sides of the white painted curb - which is near one of the entrances to the restaurant. This can be difficult to use, if there's intense rainfall, since the lobby is quite a walk away and the water ponds in sidewalk areas around the restaurant and street.

Also, do not expect this hotel to have any vacancies over the weekend for late arrival guests. Local high school sports teams use the hotel to overnight before their games.

Has an attached restaurant. Will review that separately.

Room Tip: Not ADA compliant. Also, Hilo can be very wet in the winter, so ask for a different room if there...

But then, all of Hilo is funky. We took the deluxe ocean view package for 6 nights. This included a limited breakfast at the attached Coconut Restaurant. Our room on the second floor had a view of the hotel's koi pond, Reed's Bay, and the breakwater. The room had two king beds, a mini fridge, and was reasonably clean. In-room WiFi charges were very reasonable. I would rate this hotel as a two-star property. Guests with mobility, or other ADA issues, would find this property "challenging." Early morning noise from other guests, road traffic, and aircraft traffic necessitated us to wear earplugs often. Overall, my wife and I think we got what we paid for.
