“Absolutely perfect. Our one regret was not staying longer.”
Reviewed April 20, 2009

Having just returned home after a nine-day stint on the Big Island, and all concur that Puakea Ranch was the highlight. The caretaker and his family were delightful, and they made us feel at home right away. Everything about our house was divine; it was the perfect intersection of tasteful nostalgia, luxurious comfort, and unrivaled peacefulness. Our only complaint is that our time there was too short, and we were surprised to admit we could easily spend an entire month there, at least. I expect that when I die and go to Heaven it will be a lot like Yoshi's House on a sunny afternoon. Absolutely perfect.

We traveled from all over the United States to the Big Island for a family vacation. Puakea Ranch met all of our needs. We rented both houses and the tree house to accomadate the group. Each spot had amazing ocean views, and beautiful landscaping. Yoshi's House and Miles Away were spacious and comfortable. The attention to detail was fantastic; authentic decor, luxurious linens, gourmet kitchen. The bathhouse was like our own personal spa with a gorgeous ocean view. The kids loved the pool and friendly cows and horses. The caretakers of the ranch were attentive and helpful.
The location is wonderful, close enough to drive to all the touristy stuff, but far enough away to avoid congestion and crowds. We loved the shops in Hawi.
Puakea Ranch is a gem. We hope to return soon.

After staying just about everywhere on the Big Island, we finally found the paradise we were looking for at Puakea Ranch. It has beautiful views of ocean sunsets, and amazingly sophisticated accommodations on a picture perfect property. Puakea Ranch is a place where families can enjoy a vacation full of all the adventure you can imagine and yet stay on a property that is secluded and peaceful for you to enjoy the island’s rejuvenating and relaxing influence.

Puakea Ranch is located in "rainbow ally" on the sunny side of the Island. Yoshi's House, which we stayed at has a swimming pool, a great herb garden and lots of stuff for the kids to do. It is close to the best beaches on the island, snorkeling, tennis, great hiking, and exceptional horseback riding.

It was incredible to open up the huge doors on the front of the house every morning, hear the birds and let the morning breeze in, while eating breakfast on the decks that surround Yoshi's House. Sunsets were fantastic sitting by the pool while barbequing outside. Hapuna beach and Mauna Kea beach were close by and we enjoyed playing and swimming at these beautiful white sand beaches almost every day.

Staying here is like roughing it in Luxury. It is a "Green" Ranch with horses, cattle, dirt roads, cattle gates and green practices that need to be followed. For us, these things made the place even better, but you should know that it is not your regular Paradise accommodations.

The ranch is absolutely beautiful and peaceful. A great destination for rest and relaxation. We visit the Big Island often. We usually stay at one of the resorts on the Kohala Coast. This time we opted to do something different and we are very glad we did. The ranch is a really unique and magical place. We enjoyed just relaxing in the hammocks and watching the sunsets (and the sunrises, too!). The rainbows were amazing and plentiful. Our two boys loved the ranch, too. There was a lot of space for them to run around and explore. They were also fascinated by the cattle. The accommodations were Five Star! The amazing Japanese bath house was an added plus. We will definitely be back!

just returned from our family vacation in hawaii. as a surprise we wanted to treat our children ( 15yrs & 13yrs) to a truly authentic hawaian expirience. after enjoying the manicured lawns of kohala resorts, we moved to puakea ranch and happily stayed in the miles away bungalow.
it has been restored with attention to every detail, and is very comfortable with two bedrooms, a spacious kitchen and a one- of-a-kind japanese style bathroom( voted #1 bathroom by our kids! )
our favourite moments from the ranch include waking up to the sounds of birds singing and cows mooing, petting horses ( there are two that are friendly and came to greet us), relaxing by the pool, reading books in the hamock, trying to find molly ( the cow pictured on the ranch website) and chatting with chad, the on site ranch guru.
we would love to come back, next time bringing our friends and have the adults stay in the bungalow and let the children enjoy the treehouse, just short distance from the miles away bungalow.
the puakea ranch is a gem on the road less traveled!
happy travels to all of you.

I went to visit my daughter and her new baby girl this past October in Hawi, and stayed at the Puakea Guest Ranch's recently completed Treehouse. I am the type of Grandma who looks for unique adventure and experiences...and this was AWESOME.!
This historic working ranch has been lovingly restored into guest bungalows and added new features, like my cool treehouse. The treehouse has two levels and is built in a gnarly old Acacia tree. When the wind blows, the tree creaks and groans, which I really enjoyed...great sound effects for the Halloween stories I read to my grandson!
On the first level is a darling little kitchen equipped with a mini fridge, toaster oven, dishes, double sink and eating bar and stools. Also a bathroom with a very cool tiled shower that is indoor ,yet open air. Upstairs is the bedroom, sitting room, and deck with sweeping views of the ranch pastures, and the Pacific Ocean (nice way to wake up). There is a comfy queen bed, the pillows and bed linens were really nice too.
This was far better than the treehouses of my childhood, but that's how it should be when you get to be a grandma, right?

We heard about this guest ranch from friends and had to see for ourselves. Sweeping ocean views during the day and a million stars at night. The bungalow we stayed in was beautifully restored and easily accomodated our family. The large working kitchen was perfect for when we wanted to stay in and also for a large dinner party we hosted one evening. Just a couple miles away from Hawi, turned out to be a just a great base for day trips and activities. It was whale season and amazing driving along the shore seeing whales breaching and spouting. Kids loved hiking around the ranch and seeing the cows and horses too. We're already planning our next visit.

  • Liked — Peaceful surroundings, lovely accomodations, great location, kitchen & laundry facilities
  • Disliked — Our cell service was poor.
