“A Great Escape!”
Reviewed March 10, 2011

The property is situated on a working coffee plantation studded with mac nut trees, papayas, bananas and other fruits and veggies. Needless to say, the coffee each day was wonderful. We stayed in a room called the "Crow's Nest", with its private lanai overlooking the plantation and Kealakekua Bay 1,000 feet below. The room was spacious and clean and well ventilated, with balmy tropical breezes from the trade winds wafting over our bodies each night as we slept. Keith and Karen Klukat are running the B&B (and the farm) for proprietor Kurt while he pursues his dream in that other tropical paradise, Hainan, off the coast of China. They are wonderfully warm and gracious people and they are doing a terriffic job as hosts. Karen's breakfasts each day were unbelievably delicious and featured produce from the farm. We had to share our breakfast with gold dust day geckos from time to time but they only wanted the sweet things and didn't take much. There are a couple of cats, one of which, OJ, appears to be sedated. I've never seen such a comically lethargic feline. Nothing shakes him up. Free WiFi is available if you need access to the internet and there are some wonderful restaurants nearby. We can recommend Big Jakes Hawaiian BBQ, Keei Café, Mi's Italian Bistro and for a truly unique experience at a reasonable price ($28 dinner for two with a cocktail!) don't miss the Manago Hotel!

I've learnt more in the 4 for days spent here than in the whole 3 weeks Hawaii vacation. Learnt about Capt. Cook (I borrowed a book from the B&B shelf), had interesting conversations with the other guests, learnt about the island, the plants, and Kurt's (the owner) background through the book he left in our room (the small&cozy Nut room). I was blown away by Kurt's words, both spoken and in paper, rich and informative, as he manages to convey a rare sense of measure, a common quality to whoever uses both brain and hands in their life. Reminded me of my father and told him, I just wish my father moved to Hawaii too tough ;)!!!

Back to earth: breakfast was good, atmosphere is relaxed, so is the red cat O.J., location and weather fantastic, we had Internet wireless connection in the room and worked fine, the road to the Edge is a bit tricky but if you are from Europe and used to the narrow roads it is fine. No TV in the Nut room but I honestly reckon this is a plus.

Overall I recommend this place to educated, open minded people who want to share a warm family experience.

Following Kurt's detailed directions down a couple of narrow roads from the Big Island's belt road, you leave the cares of touring behind and arrive at the home of friends - friends you didn't know you had. Kana and daughter Jenna welcomed me in the afternoon and showed where to park. Kurt and fellow gentleman farmers are discussing coffee and mac nut production down the drive. Three rooms in the house are ready for quiet enjoyment of these tropical surroundings, and the West-facing deck is there for all to enjoy the incredible view of the vast Pacific. Breakfast is informal and tasty, information on sights and day trips is shared, and off we go with borrowed snorkel gear and directions to the beaches, or to the recommended eatery up the way.

I traveled alone, had a really nice time both when I wanted to stay to myself, and also when I felt like sharing company. It's really a find on the Big Island, located in Capt. Cook, and that's an excellent base location for exploring. It's far enough out of Kailua-Kona to shake off the tourist allure and feel like you're visiting friends. Really nice. The Nut Room is economical; the Crow's Nest is a 2nd floor perch all your own with the best view, bed and personal deck. Fabulous.

What a truly perfect place. Its only 30 minutes from Kona and a few minutes (drive) from the beach. Absolutely perfect in all ways. (Although, I would put a curtain on the skylight, I can imagine the sun waking me up in the summer :) ) The location also make sit great to visit the volcano, the lava, observatory and pretty much everything else the Big Island can offer.

The hosts were fantastic and every morning we had an AWESOME breakfast. If you need to know any information about the Big Island, just ask Kurt; he's like a walking encyclopedia of the place!

So, anything else to add? Well, not really. Just a highly recommended place.

Two thumbs up!

The Edge is located in a lush area of Captain Cook with absolutely breath taking views down to the ocean. The hosts are a charming couple, Kurt and Kana, along with their precocious young daughter, Jenna. They serve a customized breakfast every morning with a myriad of Hawaiian fruits and their fabulous Kona coffee.

They were helpful with planning what we wanted to do during our stay. We visited the nearby Ethnobotannical Gardens, the Place of Refuge and the Painted Church. They also steered us to some great local eateries. Kurt gave us a tour of the plants around his home and allowed us to tag along and learn about his harvesting of the coffee.

The Edge was clean, welcoming and relaxing. Yes, the place is a little difficult to find the first time in, but it was a fun adventure. I would recommend this B & B to anyone visiting the Big Island for a true taste of Hawaiian life.

We really enjoyed our stay at Edge of the World. It was the first place we stayed on the Big Island and Kurt and his family made us feel welcome with their great breakfasts and Aloha spirit. The location was great. it was very secluded and lovely - a little tricky to get to, but follow the detailed directions and you'll have no problems finding the place, and it is definitely worth it. The view from the lanai was breathtaking! Very highly recommended.

The owners, Kana and Kurt, do a great job making this a relaxing and beautiful place to stay. From the time we made our reservation until the time our visit ended, Kurt eagerly provided helpful information about things to do on Hawaii's west coast and beyond. He also gave helpful answers to our questions and suggested snorkel spots we had not considered (such as "Two Step," which we highly recommend).

Kana prepares delicious breakfasts (available in traditional, Japanese, or vegetarian). The breakfast includes local organic fruit, such as papaya, dragon fruit, and guava. It was the best tropical fruit I've ever had. The large lanai, where breakfast is served, has magnificent views of the ocean 1000 ft down the hill.

Although Kurt says there are no rules for guests, everyone was considerate of each other, and no problems arose. In accordance with the relaxed attitude, no one cleaned the rooms or provided fresh towels during our stay. Although the main rooms of the house were very nice, the room in which we stayed didn't feel as clean or up-to-date, and some of the pillows had an unpleasant smell. Guests can borrow beach towels, mats, boogie boards, snorkel equipment, hats, and any of the other beach items in the garage. Guests may store food in the fridge. The couple's amazingly adorable five year old daughter also loves to play with the guests.

The house is surrounded by coffee trees and tropical fruit trees. Kurt will gladly give you an interesting tour of the property. To get to the house, you must drive downhill on an extremely narrow road through beautiful, lush rain forest. It was scary the first few times. I highly recommend taking Kurt's advice to arrive before dark at the beginning of your stay. (That said, we discovered that similarly narrow roads are common on this portion of the island. For instance, they're a necessary obstacle if you want to go to many of the nicest snorkel spots.)
