We just got back from spending four nights at the Luana Inn as part of our honeymoon trip, and it was excellent! The room was so comfortable and beautifully decorated and the place is even better than the pictures show. The hosts, Ken and Erin, made us feel like old friends and the food is excellent on top of it!

The location is about 1mile from (and about 300 feet above) Kealakekua Bay which makes it a short walk to the beach but still high up enough to get some of the cool breezes that you won't get at a beachside location.

We stayed in the Alaulau Suite which has it's own porch which was a really great place to have a drink and enjoy the ocean view. We were so happy with the Luana Inn that we cut short one of our "day" trips so we could come back and enjoy the afternoon by the pool instead. If we didn't already have plane and hotel reservations in Maui, we would have happily spent our entire honeymoon there.

Just one note about finding the place, the addresses are not in any logical order. Go PAST where you think the address should be, make sure you pass the junction with Middle Keei Road, past the coffee mill and then look for the large and obvious "82-5856" on the wall at the gate entrance as you turn past the coffee mill.

BTW, the Luana Inn has only been open since April, so don't worry that it isn't in any guidebooks--yet. It will be soon enough! Also, the Big Island is the best! If you're not sure about visiting it, do it, you'll love it!

Found Luana Inn by accident when surfing the web. Pictures on their web site looked too good to be true but the real life experince was even better.
http://www.luanainn.com/

The inn is located on a westward facing hillside at an elevation of approx 300 ft and overlooking Kealakekua Bay where the Captain Cook Monument is located. The view is spectacular.
Erin and Ken, the innkeepers were helpful and provided excellent suggestions on places to visit and restaurants.
The location is spectacular and rooms exceptionally clean and comfortable.
The views from the pool and hot tub area become even more spectacular at sunset. The perfect place to wind down and enjoy a drink.
Breakfast included home cooked breads that varied each day and fresh island fruits.
We spent 3 nights and quite honestly wished we had sacrificed time at other places and spent more time at Luana.

It is an easy drive from the airport less than 2 hours to the Volcano National Park which is an absolute "must see" place. Wonderful black sand beaches are close by but our favorite was approx 90 minutes drive north, past the airport. Follow the signs past te airport for Hapuna Beach but do not enter the parking lot, continue along the road until the next parking lot. It is a smaller beach with white sand, lots of shade, full facilities and wonderful snorkelling. The only thing is that there is no lifeguard.

This is definitely on our list for our next vist to Hawaii.

We found the Luana Inn to be a peaceful haven nestled in the hillside of Captain Cook. The wonderful sounds of nature greeted us each morning as we felt the ocean breeze. You will find that Ken and Erin are warm hospitable managers that do anything to make your visit memorable. This is more than a Bed and Breakfast. It is a relaxing place with wonderful amenities and delicious food that will make you not want to leave.
