“Fabulous stay!”
Reviewed April 29, 2014 via mobile

We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay with Ken and Erin. Breakfasts were varied and delicious, and all was homemade. Our room was clean , roomy, and very comfortable. Sitting by the pool afforded great views of the ocean. Bonus: free laundry access! The location is great for exploring the area, from kayaking across the bay to the Capt. cook monument. We also went to the national park nearby and snorkels in several areas. We would happily stay at the Luana Inn again!

My husband and I are not resort-type people, nor are we B&B people, but when I read reviews and realized the rooms were more like studio apartments, I knew this would be the perfect place to stay. It definitely was! Our room was comfortable, spacious, and decorated beautifully. The pool and hot tub were steps away from our front sliding doors, and the view was outstanding. Erin and Ken were such pleasurable hosts, with many suggestions of places to visit on the island. Both of them were wonderful cooks/bakers, serving breakfasts that were both delicious and healthy, always accompanied by fresh local fruit. The Luana Inn is easy walking distance to the beach, and a nearby coffee mill. This was a place we would return to again and again, and will highly recommend it to friends and family.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Makani room, which had a beautiful view of the ocean.

Our second time at Luana Inn. See our earlier review (Oct 2013) for actual details about the place.

Now, even better than before. Last time, we had pointed out a few deficiencies, such as the old noisy air-conditioner in our room. That unit has since been replaced by a powerful quiet new airconditioner. Last time there was no fragrance-free laundry detergent (you can wash your clothes here); now it is available. We like a place that reads their TripAdvisor reviews and acts upon them, and this is such a place. Our thanks to Erin and Ken. They still have the cat and the dog and the boys, but all are unobtrusive.

Erin's popovers make her breakfasts clearly superior to Ken's. Sorry, Ken; sometimes the truth hurts. There were more people here this time - including some recent young Duke graduates who were quite proud of themselves - but it was restful nonetheless. The weather was different - more overcast, and an actual short gale blew up briefly one night - but this is Hawaii. Sit back and read a book. The coffee roastery is still a short walk up the road - we bought bags of Kona, and then ordered more from there after we returned home. We also visited the Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory, up the main road in Kailua-Kona, and ended up ordering (more) chocolate from them when we returned to the mainland.

Ken and Erin - We will return as soon as our absurd professional schedule allows. Have "our" room ready. Give that goofy hound a pat on the head from us. And tell Yuki the Cat that no no no she cannot have the ham off the pizza, no ....

Not enough space to describe our stay here. The hosts/owners were friendly and provided excellent advice for visiting the big island. The view from the pool and hot tub can't be beat. The room was clean, food excellent (they will even take requests, try the banana or pineapple scones). Stayed during February 2014. Very much enjoyed the breakfast and poolside conversations with both the hosts other guests. The private setting was most relaxing as you are away from the hustle and bustle of a large resort yet conveniently located for touring the entire island. Unit kitchens are equipped with everything you need for preparing lunch or dinner yourself and there is a large grill poolside.

My wife and I stayed in the Makani Suite for 7 days in Oct 2013 - Unambiguously Outstanding. Perfectly located in the midst of Kona Coffee country, minutes away from the best snorkeling in Hawaii - Kealakekua Bay(walking distance, about 8/10ths of a mile), Manini Beach, Two Step, to name just a few. Just a 20 minute ride to downtown Kailua-Kona, but local shopping is closer in Captain Cook and Kealakekua village. Good local food nearby as well - Kalama's a 1/4 mile up the road - and on the main highway, Big Jake's BBQ and Super J's should not be missed

The Luana Inn has the three things we looked for in a BI B&B - Great Oceanview w/Sunset, pool, and a real breakfast. As many others have said, Ken and Erin are great hosts. It must be said, however, that they instill the same values in their sons. On Monday afternoon, I was in the common room when their boys came in; the older son came up to me and apologized for not being there to greet me at breakfast, as he had to go to school!

Well equipped, maintained, and comfortable room. In addition to the pool, my wife also greatly appreciated the hot tub.Suki the cat is friendly, but keeps her distance when on the lanai, and never, ever tried to slip into a guest room. (I'm allergic and had zero issues)

Breakfast from 8-9 worked perfect for us - we could run down and snorkel for an hour or so before breakfast, clean up, eat and then still have the full day in front of us.

I'll mention the snorkeling on last time - we intended to spend the week travelling all over the island, but after realizing how much there was to see, just snorkeling off the beach/shore, all within 1 to 10 miles of the Luana Inn, we threw out the plan, and went snorkeling at two or three different places every day, except for the one day we visited Volcano National Park.

We will be back. Again, and again, and again . . . . .

We stayed in the lovely Alaula suite in Luana's separate cottage. The hosts are wonderful cooks and their boys are darlings. It's a perfect location for the best snorkeling on Hawaii island. We are planning our return trip - same time next year.
