As former flatlanders living on Maui we sometimes get lonesome for a roadtrip. That's when we jump on a plane for the Big Island and pile the miles on a rental car. The quickest (and cheapest) way to scratch that itch is to bypass Honolulu and go non-stop on a commuter flight to Kailua-Kona. THEN the fun begins. Head south from the airport and about an hour later you'll come around a curve in Captain Cook and there's The Coffee Shack. Thinking pastries? You've got em. Want something more ambitious? Check out the specials board and have at it. It's a long empty drive around South Point to Volcano Village so chow down now or forever hold your piece.

Had lunch here after hike to the Captain Cook Monument. A very welcome stop after a very hot hike! Would recommend the honey iced latte and passion fruit cheese cake (we had to get the latter to go as the veggie pizza was so filling, delicious!). Gets very busy but if you can get a table near the balcony the view is fantastic on a clear day.

We had an excellent breakfast this trip with plenty of home-grown brewed Arabica Kona coffee. The early morning view from the deck was spectacular with a rainbow over the Pacific Ocean. The geckos on the railing seem to be getting fatter with their constant diet of jelly.

My 2nd time back to the Coffee Shack was even better than the first. They have added a second dining area to the back plus the under growth has been cut back to provide a spectacular open air view of the Kealakekua Bay below. Upon arriving the parking can be difficult (if full go a couple more hundred yards down the road is another space for maybe 4 more cars)

My service was fast and friendly w/ coffee at my table in just minutes even though they were pretty busy. I ordered their ample French toast served quickly w/ Luau bread (really very good) plus a side of bacon (seemed like the whole side of a pig). My friend says the Rueben sandwich is to die for so having lunch there should be just as fun. Apart from the difficult parking the men‘s room was clean but looked like the painter and plumber had forgot to finish the remodel job (oh well gives me something to complain about).

This is a really good spot to have breakfast on your way to Volcano or down to Painted Church or Honaunau (Place of Refuge) or Two Step snorkeling….maybe about 2 miles south of Manago Hotel in Captain Cook the Coffee Shack will be on your right (where all the cars are parked). You could stop at Mc‘D‘s along the way and have a so/so breakfast for 6 bucks or a really great bucks for around 12 bucks.
