“A Magical & Breathtaking Trip”
Reviewed April 23, 2014 for a stay in April 2014

We selected this property because we didn’t want to feel like tourists, but instead have the opportunity to feel like we lived here, and we did. The place met all our needs, and made the experience that much better. We had our privacy, but also were in a good location to many of the sites nearby.

In an effort to take in all that the Big Island had to offer, we were very active, yet still managed to be extremely relaxed. From snorkeling, to hiking, to coffee tasting, sight-seeing, and more, the location has it all.

The homeowners were not just hosts: they went out of their way to make sure we had a wonderful time, and we did! They remained invisible, but were always there if you had a question, or needed a suggestion on a sight to see. In fact, when I mentioned not seeing any dolphins, Janice was on her phone immediately to dial a friend to find out the scoop on any dolphin sightings; Because of the effort, my husband and I had the great privilege of swimming with a pod of dolphins, and it was a magical experience that we will never forget.

We felt we made new friends of Janice & Rusty, so thank you for the amazing experience.

We were very happy with our stay, and definitely hope to return!

“Absolute Perfection in Paradise”

Heaven! I had the most wonderful stay at Hale Nai'a and will be returning next year. Dolphins and whales often swam by my Lanai, as I enjoyed my morning Tea or meals. The tranquil sound of the ocean and waves eased me into a state of complete relaxation from the moment I arrived. Hearing the whales sing on some nights was truly breathtaking and unforgettable! From the gorgeous ocean views and sunsets, to the outdoor living area and kitchen, to the lovely outdoor shower, Hale Nai'a truly captures the essence of Hawaii. The linens and beds are of supreme quality and comfort and even provide the option to sleep outside. With the outdoor living and shower and the perfect climate, it was very easy to accustom myself to the Hawaiin lifestyle.

Hale Nai'a is within two minutes walk to the local beach, Manini, as well as within a 10-15 minute drive to several other beaches such as Ho' Okena and Honanau AKA Two step where there is amazing snorkelling and swimming and even a safe spot to boogey board and play in the waves at Ho' Okena. A suggestion to those who plan to tour and travel the Island, is to rent an SUV or truck with 4X4 capabilities, as some of the places require 4X4 to get to and are always definitely worth the drive and effort getting there. The Big Island has so much to do and explore for those who like hiking and exploring or is very peaceful and relaxing for those who want a relaxing Hawaiin vacation.

This truly was and is the Hawaiin experience and I can not wait to return next year, although for a longer stay, as a vacation in paradise is never long enough.

Y'know how when you get home from a good holiday you say "we should go back" but you don't? We rarely return to the places we've been, but we are definitely going back to Dolphin House. Janice and Rusty, the cool and friendly hosts, have a little piece of paradise on Manini Beach Road. About 35k south of Kona Kilauea and 6k down a scenic twisty road to the bay. Well off the beaten path(you need a car), Dolphin house sits among other funky cottages and houses under the palms and flowers on the bay between Captain Cook Monument (excellent snorkelling) and an ancient Hawaiian heritage site called Place of Refuge. 200 steps to a small quiet beach with great snorkelling in warm water. Rent a kayak for a short paddle to Captain Cook Monument. The spinner dolphins in the bay make an appearance most days and often stay to.... show off? We were in the water several times a day, it's warm and full of colourful fish
The cottage is clean and quiet and well equipped , the bed is great! But, you will spend your time outside under the Lanai where there is a totally equipped outdoor kitchen and living area, comfy furniture, a bamboo shielded outdoor shower and a great sunset view. There are lots of interesting things to do a short drive away, including other beaches, coffee plantations, funky shops, heritage and historical sites, good restaurants, groceries, etc. at the top of the windy 6k road. Very nice small town feel along the highway. Bring a good book for the hammock, there is no TV, but wifi is available. Janice and Rusty are very nice people, they live next door and are there if you need them for anything, but are not intrusive in the least, we really enjoyed talking to them.
Tired of the same old, same old on Oahu or Maui? Visit Dolphin House for a real taste of the real Hawaii. See ya there maybe!

“A two week stay in heaven on earth”

We have recently returned from our stay at Hale Nai'a in Captain Cook, Hawaii. In short: the title says it all - Look no further!

Close your eyes and imagine of the best vacations your could ever dream of. Hale Nai'a is much, much better. The beds are incredibly comfortable, with hotel-quality sheets and duvets. As you wake up in the morning and lay in bed, you will see whales and dolphins swimming right out your window. The exterior kitchen is fully equipped, and the fridge was packed with fresh fruits on our arrival. We did not use the interior kitchen a single time, nor did we ever shower inside, because the exterior shower is just that incredible.

The cottage is located a two-minute walk away from Manini Beach, called upon as the hidden gem of the island. Those who stay in Kona will pay up to 200$ per person to take a snorkeling tour to the exact spot where Hale Nai'a is located, and dolphin encounters are practically guaranteed over your stay. We swam almost every morning for about 2 hours, and swam with the dolphins four times.

The climate in this area of the island is the utmost-ideal. It is just cool enough to sleep comfortably at night (about 20 degrees Celcius), it never (ever!) rains, and the days are nice, sunny and hot! The plants are all tropical, yet there are no bugs whatsoever (which I loved!).

Janice and Rusty are exceptional hosts, and they made sure we checked off all of our bucket-list items before leaving. They helped us with directions, had plenty of suggestions and even accompanied us on a couple adventures. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for the unbelievable stay we had!

Once again - look no further! After driving to every part of the island over our stay, we can officially say that Captain Cook is by far the best place to stay, and the Hale Nai'a cottage what the cherry on top!
