“Miserable stay”

Paper thin walls. You hear everything from the people next door. The plumbing is terrible and you hear it like a rushing waterfall, this from all the units that are near by. For what you get this place is way OVER PRICED.

If you are into sitting in the hot springs and just relaxing, this is a great choice of places to stay. It is located in the Hot Springs Park, has a hot springs hot tub on site and there are walking trails from your front door to town and all over the park. We had a family suite, as that was the only room available (so make reservations way in advance) and it was lovely. The AAA rate was $114.78 including tax.The living room and bedroom both had nice log furniture, bed was very comfortable and there was even a stand alone air conditioner in the room for comfort.
As it was really warm the day we were there, that really was nice! The bathroom was clean and well lighted. This is an old historical building so don't expect new, modern, etc. but it has been redone and is very nice and clean. And yes, you will smell the waters, but you will do that anywhere around the park. It was nice staying inside the park as the grounds are beautiful.
Because it was warm, it would have been nice to go into the fresh water pool; however, they shut the pool down around the 1st of Sept. which was a disappointment. We did use the hot tub...be sure to do this early in the morning or early afternoon, as it gets crowded in the evening and it is not that large. There is a State Bath House in the park also where you can soak for 20 minutes free of charge, but we just used the one at the hotel.
Breakfast was in a very nice area with plenty of tables and chairs. It consisted of the usual cereals, pasteries, plus microwavable omlets and french toast. Loved using real silverware, dishes and glasses. What a treat!!
The staff was friendly and very helpful. A really nice place to stay and enjoy the hot springs.

Our advice would be to stay with family or friends in Thermopolis as we did for many, many years. But without that option, this was our first year to visit the town of the 'Smoking Baquewanna Waters'--needing commercial accommodations.
We chose the Best Western Plaza Hotel based on the photos online and TripAdvisor rating this as the #1 hotel in Thermopolis.
*Plus side: The rooms were large and very well ventilated. The original Plaza Hotel windows were still in place from the time it was built in the early 1900's. (Although they have replaced the old wooded windows with modern new ones.)
*Down side: The room's heating system may be (we aren't sure) geothermally connected to the area hot springs. While this is good, the hydrogen sulfide smell may take some getting used to. Whether or not the odor is coming from the plumbing or the outside pools, is uncertain.
*Plus side: The hotel has been remodeled and refurbished. The old apartments have been totally renovated to an American, Western style decor complete with log beds and furniture. The rooms are clean.
We reserved online a family suite on the second floor overlooking the central court pools on one side and the street/state park on the other. Again, two large rooms with a livingroom (including a fireplace-nice in winter) and a log sofabed that made out into a queen-sized bed. Elderly senior pronounced the bed "not comfortable at all.." but the fold-out would probably satisfy younger children or teens.
The fresh water courtyard pool and hot spring water soaking pool are located in the central courtyard. The pools are very clean; with cleaning done on M, W, F between the hours of 11-2 pm. Hours are 8 am to 10 pm. TIP: Use pools early in the morning if you wish a solitary swim/soak; the pools fill up with tourists in the summertime-especially in the afternoons and evenings.
The continental breakfast was modest compared to the price of our room. We paid $149 (online price) and they offered cereals, packaged oatmeal, fruit, juice and muffins down in the lobby eating area. Decor in the lobby is again, WESTERN. Nice log furniture and simple roman shades in Wyoming desert colors and western art prints made for a nice way to start the day.
Another PLUS for this hotel- is its LOCATION. There are only two hotels allowed concession in Thermopolis' State Park, and this is one of them. You have access to nice walking paths through the town's park--right at your doorstep! The paths have been in place since the 1920s and 1930s - they will take you to the park's great sightseeing venues such as "The Swinging Bridge" over the Wind River, "The Loop" around Monument Hill and the buffalo pastures.
Don't forget to drive this loop to catch a view of Wyoming's beautiful sunsets/sunrises on the herd of bison. Two commercial "theme" pools are within walking distance: "Hellies Teepee Spa" and "The Star Plunge"..both are recommended for swimming in the thermal waters supplied by the "World's Largest Hot Springs." (Although an earthquake 3 years ago has shifted the flow-rate).
We had dinner across the street at the Safari Club. Three of us had Buffalo Steaks or Hamburgers! Delicious! If you are concerned with your waistline/cholesterol--go Bison! Buffalo meat has HALF the calories of regular beef and less fat/cholesterol than chicken.
For golfing, we suggest driving up to the Thermopolis Country Club located just below "Roundtop"-the famous red sandstone hill north of the city. You can play 18 holes on a course designed in 1962-the views are outstanding! Pioneers came to the area and carved their names on the top of ole Roundtop-where you can still see their graffiti from the 1890's -1900's.
All in all, the Plaza Hotel offers alot for families or couples wishing to explore this area of rich history, geological wonders and the State Park. The Hot Spring mineral waters have long been touted for longevity--it is documented that many of the area's residents live to be over 100 !!

We were in Thermopolis with two nine year olds for the dinosaur dig and enjoyed the hotel while the boys were doing their thing. The family suite was like a bedroom and a lounge with pull out sofa so we had more privacy than regular motel room. Staff was great, the location tops. Would stay there again.

We've stayed at the BW Plaza Hotel 4 or 5 times. It is a destination for us during our anniversary motorcycle trips. We have always had clean rooms and enjoyed the log furniture and nice bathrooms. This is a renovated courthouse built in 1918 so the rooms have character and are not your normal cookie-cutter shapes. I enjoy soaking in the mineral water fed hot pool. The temperature varies...this trip 108 but we've felt it hotter and cooler.

My wife and I went up to Thermopolis to get out of the Colorado Front Range for a long weekend. Having never been there, I was a bit uneasy after reading all of the reviews of motels in Thermopolis, but I chose what appeared to be the best of the lot, the Best Western. It turned out to be a very good choice. It's a remodeled spa originally built at the turn of the (last) century. The rooms are around the central hotel spa area and offer access and privacy. The room was extra large with newer western decor (log furniture): desk, table & chairs, reading chair & table. A/C. Very good bed. Clean and quite comfortable. Large tiled bathroom. Nice pool with a hot springs hot tub. The motel is on the grounds of the hot springs park -- the state-run (free) and two commercial hot springs ($10/day) are just a couple minutes' walk away. The motel is fronted by the Wind River. The included breakfast was typical for a good motel, with a reasonable selection of good items. The other motel on the park grounds is the Day's Inn. I checked it out while I was there and was very glad that we were at the Best Western -- the Day's Inn has definitely seen better days -- pretty worn -- and more for traveling than staying the weekend. All other motels in town are not in the park, but the town is not that big that anything is more than a few minutes drive away. We found a very good Mexican restaurant in town, La Fuentes, and highly recommend it if you like Mexican food (in fact, we ate there both nights we were in town). This destination could also make a good family get-away for kids that like water, because the commercial hot springs' have water slides as well as pools. There is a great hike in the park with a suspension bridge over the Wind River, and you can also drive a couple miles and see an American bison herd.

Stayed here for one night. Room was good size, slightly old fashioned, but clean. Bathroom equally good size. Beds were comfy and although we could hear people moving about upstairs, it was no problem. It was really nice to be able to sit outside in the courtyard around the pool - I suspect it could be very busy in peak season, but it was great whilst we were there. It was good to be so close to the thermal area and the smell was of no consequence. Had a very good meal at the Days Inn Safari Club, which is opposite.
