Owner description: A historic battlefield.

I have stopped at Fort Phil Kearny a couple of times. Not only is it set in one of the most beautiful places I've been, but the area is mostly undeveloped so you can picture what it was like when the fort was still there. The museum is full of educational exhibits that help transport you back in time. If you plan on going to Little Bighorn, this is a nice stop along the way.

This sight is very interesting if you are into history of settling the West. However, there is not much left of the fort and there is little reconstruction. This is not an attraction children would enjoy.

Not much to see of the fort itself, but a very informative visitor center. Stop here before visiting the Fetterman Massacre site or the Wagon Box Battlefield site or the Rosebud Battlefield or any of the battlefields for that matter. The videos and exhibits help to tie all events together into a coherent part of history.

This is the Fort where Captain Fetterman and 81 of his men were ambushed and wiped out by Lakota Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho Indians in 1866. Great exhibits, very nice book store. Then make the short drive to the memorial and see the battle site!

As mentioned before, not much to the fort, but if you like history and have a little imagination, this place is great. Wiki the fetterman massacre and cabin box battles to read event details. Cabin box rd (well maintained dirt ) is worth the drive into Story town. Even if you don't like history, lots of deer, turkeys and we saw a mountain lion.
