Rawlins KOA
Reviewed July 13, 2010

We had a very sick baby and decided that we better not travel with him anymore the day we were supposed to arrive in Rawlins. I called the day of our reservation to cancel, full well knowing that we ran the chance of forfeiting our deposit, but the RUDENESS that came along with it was not expected! Not only did they say that we would still have to pay the full rate, they were EXTREMELY rude about it. No sympathy what-so-ever! It was just "too damn bad" and "you have to pay anyway". Incidentally, we had to cancel another KOA on our trip (in Deadwood, SD). The people there were so friendly and and they gladly returned our deposit. We did plan on staying at the Rawlins KOA when we finally did make it down that way, but didn't make a reservation not knowing which day we would arrive. Thank God! The place was an absolute DUMP. We pulled in and pulled right back out. We ended up driving a little further and staying at the KOA in Rock Springs - Big difference!!!

Arriving on a very windy, and soon to be cold day, we were given a site 3 back from the shower house. Now if we were traveling with your traditional RV that has "facilities", or we didn't have a 6 year who may need to go to the bathroom at 2am, or it wasn't going to be 10 degrees at night, this wouldn't be an issue. Grudgingly we were told we could move one site closer but the other two had to be saved for handicapped. At this time of year...... oh well if that is the rule.

My boys were also told they couldn't play on the playground.

As far as I have seen the facilities are clean.

I am grateful that this KOA is in this place along our road. I wish we were welcomed.

We were driving through Wyoming on our way to CO, getting ready for 6 days of dry camping. Last chance for laundry and decent showers. Purposely drove further to reach this location as the reviews were good and looked like a newer, nice, clean KOA. However, got in at 2:30 a.m., went to do laundry at 11:40 a.m. (not realizing the check out time was 11:00-our fault). My 12 year old son who was standing outside of the laundry room waiting for me and was greeted by Glenda, one of the owners not with "Hi", but "Who do you belong to?" I then went on to explain that we were in late last night and were hoping to get in one load of laundry and a shower; if there was any way we could do a late check out. She said restrooms were closed and there was only grace until noon, which would not allow enough time to even just wash clothes. She would not budge. At the same time, my husband heard a knock on the door of the motor home. It was Dennis, the other owner, who, again, did not even greet with a "hi" or "sorry to bother you" or "good morning," but "Are you planning on staying another night?" My husband said "no". He says "Then you're 40 minutes past check out time." He explained that we didn't come in until after 2:00 a.m. and that we were hoping to get in a shower and a load of laundry. He replied "Well, check out time is 11:00." Now, we don't go around expecting everyone to accommodate our every whim. However, there are occasions where a little understanding would be nice. Not only was there no understanding, but they weren't even polite about it. The campground was easily 90-95% empty, and it seems in our opinion a little bit of good customer service could have gone a long way. There was never any type of friendly greeting--towards any of the 3 of our family members that came in contact with them. My husband said, "Well, at least they were consistently rude." That's the truth. Extremely disappointed, won't go back, purely due to the rude customer service. Bummer for them because the place is actually really nice and well-maintained. What a contrast to the Salt Lake City KOA we just came from--accommodating, friendly, "can do" attitude--(we stayed there extra nights because of it.)

I've stayed here on a couple occasions for layovers on treks. My ratings are relative to other KOA's and organized campgrounds - obviously these properties don't compete with hotels. Details...

GOOD:
--Inexpensive
--You can rent a Kamping Kabin, which is a little wood cabin that sleeps three or four (bring your own sleeping bag or sheets, though)
--The showers (common), pool area and other common spaces are remarkably clean given its a highway-side campground
--Management is friendly and accomodating

BAD:
--There is nothing the slightest bit luxurious about it
--One has to walk across the gravel parking lot to use the bathroom

Not much else to add.

Imaculate property. Bathrooms and showers sparkled. Easy to find with a heated swimming pool. Managers were friendly and helpful. Great wayside stop while traveling through Wyoming. Eat breakfast at the Square Shooter's Eating House for some local flavor and then tour the old Wyoming State Prison, including a seat in the gas chamber.

On the negative side - the site is close to the highway and noisy, the landsape is barren, no trees at all (but this is (Wyoming).

Would stop here again for the Bathrooms.
