“'free' fish and ADA fishing access.”

Jackson National Fish Hatchery
Reviewed September 30, 2013

with a avid fisherman in our group, we had to stop and see the fish hatchery. it was a self guided tour of the tanks in the building. they several posters on the wall about the process..we learned a few things. nice bathrooms...but i had to track down an employee for TP. we then found out that they don't kill their breeding stock (like salmon). they are kept for a couple of years and then released back into the river. Free fish = if you have a license, they have a pond with very large trout...one per person. nice ADA fishing dock. the people at the pond were having more luck than us on the river. right next to the Elk Preserve = nice views.

We stopped in on our way to Yellowstone. The kids really enjoyed seeing the fish and learning about the process of raising the fish and stocking the river. Parking is at the top and you have to walk down to the hatchery along a paved walkway, which had some interesting fact markers along the way for the kids to read. There were a lot of ground squirrels in the brush running around in the open which was entertaining. The volunteers were very informative and gave us a tour. The kids were very happy to meet "Kitty," the hatchery cat that roams around and is very friendly. While we were there, we knocked out a couple of cub scout requirements, which was a bonus! If we didn't stop, it wouldn't have been a big deal. We had time to stop in so we did.

We spent one day in Jackson & the weather wasn't the greatest so our 10 yr old, who LOVES fish/fishing, asked if we could stop here. Volunteers take you on a quick tour, showing you the life cycle of these fish that they breed- from egg to 5ish years or so- each having their specific area. I guess you can fish in the lake here too (with a permit, I'm sure.) It was free, didn't take that long and made my son happy... All good things. Would I have gone here by myself? No, but that's the great thing about Jackson... There's something for everyone. :)
