My husband and I visited Jackson for a ski trip at the end of March. It was our first time there and I had seen the elk refuge on our drive into town from the airport so I was really excited to see the elk up close. We went to the visitors center on a Tuesday morning to purchase our tickets. Adults were $18 each and included transportation from the visitor's center to the elk refuge via bus and then the sleigh ride out into the refuge. Our trip was on a wagon as their wasn't enough snow on the ground for a sleigh.
The horse-drawn wagon, complete with wool blankets, takes you right into the middle of the elk herd. The elk just hang out, and in some cases almost pose for pictures, and don't seem to mind the horses at all. Our guide, Jordan, was funny, personable, and very knowledgeable answering all of our questions.
Bring your binoculars because we also got an opportunity to see a coyote and bison. You can also visit with the horses afterwards. It was a great way to spend the morning and I highly recommend to anyone on a winter trip to Jackson.
