Make a resi. 9 or 11am. You re taken by small tour bus to the overlook and into the the conveyor and shipping process. Awesome operation to see a 140 car train load under a silo that is constantly being fed by convneyors and gigund dump trucks. Knowledgeable tour guide- a woman and former coal truck driver-knows it all. Very welcoming staff and best of all it s FREE! Don t miss this . takes two fun hours.

Unfortunately, we were in Gillette on a weekend so we couldn't get a tour. We drove to the overlook where we could look down into the mining operation. Even though it was Sunday, there was mining going on. At least six dump trucks were running back and forth emptying overburden. The way they cut one side and fill the other, the hole actually moves as they follow the coal vein. A huge 13' tire and scoop bucket are on display.

Great free tour...very educational and interesting. Had a wonderful guide. 2 hours and worth every minute of it. Comfy AC bus to take us there.

Definitely call the Visitor Center and make a reservation. The tour guide we had was a teacher in the local Jr High and she was an awesome tour guide. She actually worked at that mine for a while and was able to give us some first-hand info. Great way to learn a bit about the Energy Capital, Gillette.

Need a leg stretch on the long, flat interstate across Wyoming? For a picnic spot with a difference try the viewing area overlooking the open-cast coal mine outside Gillette. Follow the signs for the airport and it’s just beyond that, you can’t miss it.
