“Don't trust the pictures”

We stayed here a few years ago(maybe even 2010) and it has served as a cautionary experience when booking a place to stay from the internet. It is not really conveniently located to Yellowstone(getting there through Cooke City takes way too much time if you plan on spending the day at Yellowstone) but it is by the Chief Joseph and Beartooth scenic highways. The pictures show a secluded cabin but the reality is that it is within a compound of other 2nd homes---complete with kids zooming by on ATV's at all hours of the day and night. The view from the front porch is excellent and my family had a great fire in the front yard w/the mountains in the background. Deer in the front yard were a cool sight. However, we were very disappointed with the condition of the inside. There was a full bowl of dog food in the middle of the floor when we arrived and the furniture was nasty---the green velor' couch from 1962 was classic. We also found many personal items left out in plain sight in the bedrooms---aside from photos--not a big deal--the KY jelly on the dresser made us all sleep in our sleeping bags on top of the mattresses purchased during the Eisenhower administration. Clanliness is clearly not a priority. We had been camping for much of this trip and are not usually very fussy---but we used our own cooking utensils and towels----bummer. Also,if you want to go to the river, you have to trespass on someone else's property---this is not stated in the advertisement. There is really nothing of significance that is close by to this place---everything is a long drive. Overall, we were very disappointed in this property and felt that the $175(now they charge $225???) was not worth the money. When we brought these issues up with the booking agent, they could have cared less. My family reminds me of Holler's Hideout every time I say I booked through the internet. Renter beware!

Management Response
Aug 17, 2013
Gus, thank you for taking a moment to review this vacation rental. My response to your main issues:

1. We purchased Cody Lodging Company in April 2012. The booking agent and owners you dealt with are no longer with us. Cody Lodging Company didn't even advertise on FlipKey until August 2012. In other words, it is only because of our improvements that you are able to write us a bad review. ;)
2. The home is less than 30 minutes from Yellowstone National Park and the road leads right into the Lamar Valley. This entrance is the best spot for wolf packs, grizzlies, elk and moose. Just ask all the professional photographers on the side of the road! People often under-estimate the size of the park so I can understand why you felt the drives were long. As for activities, this cabin is surrounded by hiking, fishing, mountain biking, off-road vehicle trails, lakes, horse trails and one of the most scenic drives in the country.
3. We keep the home clean and everything is in great condition. If there is a complaint, we take care of it immediately.
4. There is a trail head located 100 yards south of the cabin. It is accessible without trespassing on anyone's property.

We appreciate the time you took to write a review but felt the need to let everyone know this is not a true reflection of Holler's Hideout or Cody Lodging Company. Perhaps you will find yourself in the area again some day and can give us the opportunity to show you some real western hospitality!
