An impressive structure with an informative visitor's center. Amazing to think it was built during the coldest months of the year. Worth a stop as you head into Yellowstone from the east (or if you are heading to Cody.

It is very easy to spend two to three hours here as we did reading everything there. I was there 30 some years ago and the road followed the river then and since then they have bored thru the rock and made tunnels for the new road. You can still see some of the old road from the top of the dam. The display inside is very interesting.

I honestly loved the views and the little "golf cart" ride to the dam.It was nice to know that I did not have to limp all the way up to see the views. I personally liked the history of the tunnels going up to the dam.

The Buffalo Bill Dam and Visitor Center is located six miles west on US 14/16/20 from the town of Cody. It is soooooooooooo worth the drive! Once you park your car, you can choose to ride a golf cart to the Visitor's Center or walk there. The ride is free (going and coming) but we always like to tip; the money helps the volunteer services. There is a self-guiding historical audio tour available for $4. Completed in 1910 and standing 328 feet tall, it was the tallest dam ever built up to that time and the world's very first arch dam (the forerunner to the Hoover Dam). The height has been increased to 343 feet. The dam and reservoir provide the water supply for Cody and the Big Horn Basin. In addition to the dam overlook, the Visitor Center has views of beautiful Shoshone Canyon....breathtakingly beautiful....area wildlife displays and dinosaur and fossil exhibits. You can also view a film. We walked out onto the bridge and had the most awesome views ever! Do not miss this!
