We very much enjoyed the state museum, totally free including free parking and no pressure to make donations. They have lots of assorted exhibits about the old west. The people are very friendly. The city is the largest in Wyoming with only 70K people, so getting around is very easy.

This museum is worth a visit if you're going to be in Cheyenne. I wouldn't recommend driving from Denver or anyplace further afield just for this museum, though. It's small and worth only an hour of your time.

Very professionally done museum in the heart of downtown Cheyenne. Well executed displays and well written descriptions of museum items. No charge to enter and very friendly staff. Excellent collection of frontier items including rare firearms an Native American artifacts. Go.

A person can learn a great deal about Wyoming history. You can spend quite a long time going through the museum.

Definitely worth a visit - well-done displays, with interesting information about Wyoming history. It's not too large, either, so you can enjoy it all. Too bad we didn't get a chance to check out the Museum Store - it looked intriguing through the window and another reviewer raved about it. However, the day we were there, it was closed for what a volunteer reception desk worker described as lunch hour - we left and returned nearly 2 hours later only to find it still closed. Maybe a staff member or volunteer could be trained to fill in for the regular employee[s] when needed. My suggestion to future visitors - if the store is open when you arrive, maybe you should check it out then [if they'll allow you to lug your purchases through the museum, of course].
