Sunburst Lodge Bed and Breakfast

We stumbled on to the Sunburst Lodge while visiting relatives in Casper. What a wonderful surprise. We are not "off-roaders" and it was easy to find, but yet secluded and quiet. We were graciously welcomed by Nancy and accomodated in a beautiful room without prior notice. (I wouldn't recommend coming w/out prior notice, as this B&B was a true treasure & will fill quickly.) Nancy is a great cook & knows the Casper area well. The Lodge is beautifully decorated, luxury beds & bath, and a spectacular view of the city below. We will be back and bring our friends & relatives!

I wanted to book something special for my honeymoon night and thought this would be the place. I wanted it to be a surprize for my fiancee so my mother went with me to find the place and we had a hard time finding it -- the directions I had did not match with the miles. After calling Nancy and getting better directions (she told me she had been waiting for me for an hour and that she even left work early for me -- which she did not have to do so that wasn't my problem ) -- Nancy said she'd see us there in a bit. When we finally found the place - There were no cars there, the place was dark -- not a light on and no sound. My mother and I both rang the front door bell and knocked on the door numerous times -- I then walked up the stairs and rang the door bell as well as the side doors. Looking in the windows we saw no one and heard nothing. We ended up leaving & on the way back down the moutain I got a hold of Nancy -- she swore she was there the whole time and that she never heard anything and said that her dogs would have barked if we were there -- as if she didnt believe we were there. By then my fiancee was home and I really wanted to get our stay lined out -- so I ruined the surprize and told him and we told Nancy we would be up there in a few minutes to try meeting with her again. When we got there -- tons of lights were on in the home and a vehicle was in the drive way -- AND I rang the door bell once and Nancy answered... she was very rude --- showing me how to ring her doorbell -- as if I dont know how to do it.. I told her my mother and I both tried to as well as knocked -- (does she really think 2 people dont know how to push a button?) My fiancee and I walked in the door and Nancy was cold and not friendly at all. She gave an additude because we didnt take off our shoes --- no sign to say to -- and why? A BB is run like a hotel... my fiancee had his work boots on that tie up high up his leg -- the hassle to sit down and untie them and then put them back on and retie them is ridiculous when we were only going to be there a few minutes. Anyway -we fell in love with the place -- it is a very beautiful place no doubt. So we discussed it and decided even though we were treated very rudely -- we would still book because of the place. Then she tells us that she wants us to check in by 930PM -- telling us what time we have to be in---- aren't you supposed to accomidate to your guests? we are paying YOU. The circumstance of the time was fine though because we happen to be getting married at the Natural Bridge and park rules -- we had to be out of there by 8 anyway. So we said ok.
We never saw any paper work, any agreement -- NOTHING..... THINGS changed-- looking at the weather we realized we can not get married outside as the weather more than likely would not hold up. So we had to change our wedding location -- in doing so we moved to a hotel and we were happy with that because we could actually host a real reception -- a reception that could last till 1AM if we wanted -- like most receptions do. So I called Nancy a little over a week before the wedding and left a message on her phone that we had to cancel the room. Unfortunately when she called back -- I was in a place I couldn't answer my phone. When I checked my voice mail -- I got her message that she got my cancelation and said that if she doesn't have anyone book the room by that date that she will charge us half the room cost -- thats over $80!!! She NEVER told us any regualtions if we were to cancel --- she never gave us any kind of contract -- paper work nothing and there is NOTHING on her website that states she will do this if we cancel... so what is she making up rules as she goes???
We found Nancy to be rude, inconsiderate and stuck up. I really wish we could say we had a good experience like all the reviews before -- but honestly I have NOTHING good to say about her --- take her out of the BB and I'd stay there in a heart beat.
I DO NOT recommend any one staying at her BB.

I need to point out to anyone thinking about staying at a Bed and Breakfast that a B&B is not a hotel, and it is not, "run like a hotel". A B&B is by definition, a private home. The public is not at liberty to enter a B&B without invitation and/or reservation - which constitutes invitation. Most B&B's don't have the kind of facilities a hotel would have, and they don't operate with the same kind of policies a hotel can.

A hotel with many rooms generally doesn't have a problem dealing with cancellations 24 hours out or even same day as reserved, but a B&B with only a few rooms is severely affected by guests who cancel after they have perhaps turned away other business on the basis of the reservation they have. Most B&B's have a fairly strict policy regarding cancellation, and most require the guest to give a credit card number to secure their reservation when made. If you give a credit card number to secure a reservation you should understand that means you are allowing a deposit to be made to hold your reservation and it could be at risk.

Even though such cancellation policies are completely defensible and acceptable in the world of Bed and Breakfast's, Sunburst Lodge has never charged anyone anything, not even a service fee, if they didn't actually stay overnight with us. The above reviewer was not charged although they and others have been told they could be charged.

Sunburst Lodge has had numerous couples who have chosen to spend their wedding night with us, and all have found it to be the perfect end to their perfect day. Most of them have not come in very early, which is perfectly fine as long as it's by advance arrangement. Apparently I had some kind of communication problem with the reviewer and I regret that. But, if asking someone to take their work boots off when they enter your home during "mud season" constitutes being rude, then I plead guilty. Time is not the issue, it doesn't take but a minute or two to track mud into my home or anybody's home.

Although most folks don't have trouble finding Sunburst Lodge it can be problematic, but if we were in the middle of down town then the reason for being here would be lost. A new sign is being installed at the sometimes confusing intersection this week.

If you want the services you get at a hotel then you should stay at a hotel, however if you want a unique and more personalized experience then consider staying at a Bed and Breakfast, be it this one or another Bed and Breakfast.
