Staying at this hotel made our whole roadtrip! When we arrived, the service at the front desk was amazing - made sure we had everything and then strongly recommended the music playing in the hotel bar, which turned out to be an amazing bluegrass band.
The building itself is a historical property, where Buffalo Bill once stayed. The town is exactly what you'd expect of Buffalo, Wyoming.
This is an amazing place and you're lucky if you get to stay there!

Rooms were beautiful and clean, lots of room. Hosts were friendly and helpful, all in all, a very good experience. The bar next door is also great and young kids are welcome, though can't be near the actual bar. The music in there was also good and there was a great atmosphere. Breakfast was had next door and was also of a high standard. Would I go there again? Definitely!

What can you say about this hotel that hasn't been said already. It is totally unique and has been a real labour of love for the owner and her late husband. While chatting to her she informed us that before they purchased the hotel it was going to be bull-dozed and the land used for a mall or parking lot. That would have been an absolute travesty. We had booked the Bordello Suite as we have never stayed in a bordello before!! It consisted of 3 beautifully furnished bedrooms and a fantastic bathroom (really lovely toiletries). There was also a communal kitchen area which had everything you would need for a comfortable stay (dining table, coffee maker, iron and board etc.). All the public rooms of the hotel are crammed full of antiques. Our only regret was that the Virginian Restaurant was closed as we stayed on a sunday but it gives us a reason to return. We ate instead at the Busy Bee Cafe next door and the food was really good. The staff, although very young, were excellent. We also ate breakfast there and again we had no complaints whatsoever. We had a couple of drinks in the hotel saloon which is truly amazing, we thought we were on the set of a cowboy movie! If you find yourself in Buffalo, Wyoming please check out the Occidental (even if it is only to look around) you won't regret it.

We stayed here on the way back to Denver from Yellowstone.
This was our favourite hotel that we stayed at on our three week holiday.
A fantastically unique hotel, it was like stepping back in time but whilst keeping most of the modern facilities you get in modern hotels. The attention to antique detail in all areas was stunning - the rooms, reception, the bar and the restaurant. So much to look at and admire!
We stayed in the Owen Wister suite, which had plenty of space and a fabulous bath. We enjoyed a couple of drinks in the charismatic bar and a fabulous meal in The Virginian.
Service was friendly and helpful - the owner was working behind reception and it was clear from her enthusiasm that the hotel renovation was a real labour of love for her.
We were just sorry that we could not stay for longer than one night.

My husband and I stayed at Occidental a couple of nights in the summer of 2007; we liked it so much that this year we returned for 3 nights and we were delighted. The hotel restoration was and still is a labor of love. The hotel literarily "transports" you back in time over 100 years from the moment you step in the lobby: the decor, the soft music, the attention to details and the friendly staff make you feel welcome. Our suite, Cloud Peak, was very spacious and tastefully decorated - the bathroom alone is bigger than some chain hotel rooms. The costume gallery and the library are very impressive. We also enjoyed reading about the hotel history, it's illustrious guests and the long restoration process; Dawn and her late husband did a marvelous job rescuing and restoring this great historic hotel. Special treats were the Thursday night Blue Grass jam session at the Occidental Saloon and the excellent dinner at the Virginian restaurant.

Room Tip: Check out as many rooms as you can as rooms and suites are different but all are charming?

During our long trek from Keystone, South Dakota toward Yellowstone National Park, our group of five adults had a planned stop at The Occidental Hotel in Buffalo Wyoming for lunch. Since we already knew their Virginian restaurant was only open for dinner time, we’d planned on eating in their Busy Bee cafe. First we spent a little time wandering & about checking out the first floor of this lovely historic hotel. In the process we discovered the bar back by the Virginian was empty of customers despite being open for business on a hot, mid-July day. The posted menu was limited to roughly a half dozen offerings but each of us decided there was something we’d be happy to order. I spied a bottled of Midori among the bar’s supply of liquor and said I’d like something with that in it. Without hesitation, Keisha, the bar tender, concocted a refreshing drink for me incorporating vodka and cranberry juice. She invited us to tour the upstairs while we waited for our food. Ropes across open doorways allowed viewing of unoccupied rooms. Housekeeping staff encountered our party and cheerfully pointed out a stairway to an area they said most people miss viewing. Once back at the bar, our food arrived and we were delighted by friendly conversation whenever Keisha wasn’t attending to other customers.

It was clear to us from all the staff we encountered at the Occidental that this was a most welcoming place. We continued on our journey after a tasty lunch wishing we’d planned an overnight here.

While the furnishing are antique, the up keep on the hotel is lacking. Our room smelled like mildew and wasn't very clean. I would only look around inside, but don't stay there. They said you can have a room along the creek, well, the creek is no big deal. The room was misquoted and overcharged. The desk help was very unpleasant.

Room Tip: Don't staty
