This area of Wyoming is rife with history and rich in heritage and the Gatchell Museum does an excellent job of putting it all on display. This is one of my favorite museums in the Nation. If you don't include it in your plans you'll miss an excellent experience and will be the poorer for it.

Our family of four passed through Buffalo on our way from Casper to Sheridan and decided to stop for the museum and lunch. This museum is THE place to learn about the interesting history of Johnson Co, WY. It is housed in the 1909 Carnegie Library building near the Johnson Co. Courthouse in Buffalo, WY. We purchased admission in the gift shop, and headed downstairs, armed with a map, to start the tour. In the first room, a looping video about Johnson County and Jim Gatchell runs. Directly behind the video seating is a wall-rack full of fascinating old photos from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Take the time to explore these. The room's big attraction is the giant wolf pelt, a big hit with my teens. The museum's other rooms include Native American artifacts (many from Jim's personal collection) and dioramas of significant historical events in Johnson Co. There's also a great reproduction of Jim Gatchell's pharmacy where you can look through some of his store records and let Jim guide you around. As a history-lover myself, I found the museum to be a lovely tribute to a fellow history nut.
