Review of US Highway 16

US Highway 16
Ranked #1 of 18 things to do in Buffalo
Certificate of Excellence

Driving west from Buffalo you climb through tree covered hills until you reach the pass. From then on the trees disappear and the views get spectacular. The canyon walls at times are so high that you can't photograph them without a wide lens. Scenic part ends at Ten Sleep, which has a tiny but interesting museum.

A hard haul, hilly and curvey, but take your time and enjoy the mountain views. We cut off and went through Crazy Woman Canyon and was wowed! Would recommend a high clearance vehicle for some spots, one lane road, gravel and some rough spots. Breathtaking, though.

We travelled over the Bighorn Mountains on Hwy 16 and found it a beautiful drive to Worland. While there were some grades to go up and down there were none too hard for an old car. Would highly reccomend!

Get off the main interstate and really see Wyoming! Take the exit for Highway 16 in Buffalo and turn either way...right or left. Right will take you on over toward South Dakota and left will take you to the Big Horn Mountains, Ten Sleep and beyond. There are little communities, open range, beautiful fields of grain and corn. There are groups of Pronghorn antelpe roaming and the deer are playing. You'll cross creeks and rivers and drive thru high canyon walls that are millions of years old. The very best photographs of moose I have ever taken were on Highway 16 in the Big Horns. There are beautiful lakes. There are old barns from years gone by just waiting to show up in your photographs. I would highly suggest you get yourself some sort of self-guided tour book to take along and read out loud while someone else is driving. Be prepared to stop lots of times. If not to take a photo or have a picnic then just to listen to the silence of the world at its best.

A nice curvy mountain drive through the Bighorn Mountains, but not so many switchbacks that you are braking constantly or get sick to your stomach.
