“Meet deer face to face, literally!”

We have been to this park twice. The first time it was a great experience, because we could get very close to the deer, but they were not all over us, like this last time, when we went this fall (2013). Last time we visited, it was in the summer, and deer were well behaved. This fall, however, bunches of deer were chasing us like crazy begging for food, getting too close to be comfortable, especially for our little girls, who were afraid of them. If you go with old enough kids, I would recommend this park.

My husband and I visited the Deer Park years ago and decided to take our three-year-old son there when we returned to the Dells this year. We went the first week of October 2013 and it was fantastic to go in the off-season for the Dells because there was only one other family in the park with us. We purchased the $3 package of food and the deer came running---literally running---once they heard the packaging and about two dozen surrounded us as soon as we got through the gates. They were calmer once the food was all gone and seemed to enjoy the attention of just being petted. The park also had food machines throughout the park where you could purchase extra handfuls of food for $0.25. An enjoyable afternoon with family!

It was a beautiful fall day when we visited and as we paid the fee we were asked it we wanted to purchase crackers for the animals. We did and felt the price was a bit step for what appeared to be a couple of packages of Rye Crisp. That aside, the deer are mostly wandering freely around the park and will certainly come for the cracker snacks. We visited for at least two hours and enjoyed watching the small children interact with the animals. All in all, a great way to spend a portion of your day in the Dells and an opportunity to get some great pictures with the animals.

I was a little skeptical going in that this was just another tourist trap that maybe had one or two half dead deer that you could go look at. Still, the wife had been here as a kid and wanted to go with our kids. I was totally wrong with my expectations. There were tons of deer, they all seemed healthy, and you really got to interact with them.
They do make you purchase the special wafers to feed the deer, but they were reasonably priced. I would recommend letting an adult hold on to them and giving the kids small pieces to feed the deer with or you will end up going through the wafers quickly as the deer have no problem eating as much as they can get.
In addition to deer there are some other animals around - horses, emus, peacocks, goats, etc. Obviously you are going to a deer park for the deer, but it is nice to have some "bonus" animals too!

This is our favorite place in the Dells. We go here at least once every year. The place is well run. Lots of deer and even more if you go in the spring. Lots of different animals here not just deer.
