We'd been here once before and thought it was an ok place (nothing to rave about though). This time around we weren't at all pleased. We went for lunch, and the menu is mainly wraps and pasta choices. Two people in our group ordered wraps that were way to heavy on the lettuce. We shared an order of calamari. The calamari came with two wedges of lemon that had large dark brown spots on the rind. We were very surprised they would have served something like this, which in turn led us to wonder about the freshness and quality of their ingredients. The rest of us ordered pastas. These were good.
We were seated at a window, and looking out, there was nothing but garbage and tons of cigarette butts. Of course this is no fault of the restaurant, but never the less it was quite a bad view. :(
A birthday was being celebrated, and one of the guests was charged an $8 'cake serving fee' to bring in her own cake. We wondered why.... because, first of all, the waitress ruined the surprise by announcing, 'should I bring the cake now?' Then she brought the cake out and it was still boxed up and in the plastic bag, with candles still in their box, plopped it on the table and walked off. HMM?
Oh well.... we still enjoyed the afternoon, but we won't be going back again.
Wonderful, home made, fresh food and what great waitstaff...especially Amy! thanks for making my day so special!
This is a wonderful place to go for lunch or a light dinner. The wine selection is very good and the menu is exciting. There is a listing of seasonal specials each month. Some of my favorites are a the Kix oriental salad (yes, real cereal in a salad) and the various ravioli choices. My go-to choice is the Cusabi, a shrimp, cucumber, and wasabi wrap. There is also a unique rotating dessert selection that has included olive oil, black pepper cheesecake (it was seriously decadent).
We visited while in Mauston for college baseball games, before peak season. Because of this, the restaurant wasn't busy. Johnny, the bartender, was also our server. Not having been there before, he was great telling us about various dishes. My wife and I chose the All American - wow! What a great meal we had. My son had the Pork Loin and his fiance had the cheesiest Grilled Cheese I've ever seen. All of our meals were excellent.
We make it back to the Wisconsin Dells area every couple years and would love to eat at High Rock Cafe again. Service and food were the best!
