“Brought you back before the Dells got all built up”
Reviewed October 25, 2011

This is a photography museum located on Broadway. It had some videos you could watch of pictures H.H. Bennett took of the area. It also had some displays on how he developed pictures and what travellers did back in the day. It also showed his old photography workshop and the gift shop he used to own. Don't forget to see the second floor. That is where you would find some old photos of attractions, hotels, and people from the area. I was there for about two and a half hours. Depends on how much time you want to spend reading and watching what the museusm has to offer. I personally liked seeing pictures of the dells before all the megawaterparks and resorts popped up. I wish there were more places to sit in the museum.

“Quaint, Better Than Expected...”
Reviewed August 27, 2011

My girlfriend and I visited the Dells a number of times over the years and for the first few visits, simply did the touristy waterpark/t-shirt shop things.

Last year, we decided to take the Upper Dells Boat tours (which was excellent), and were introduced to a number of scenic areas we didn't previously know about.

Throughout the tour, we learned about H. H. Bennett, and his studio, but never had the chance to visit.

Being somewhat interested in photography, we decided this time to pay a visit.

Honestly, we were not expecting much at all, but it was a rather decent museum. You're not going to kill a day, but it was quite well done and being able to step into Bennett's old studio was definitely a treat.

I would personally recommend taking some of the scenic tours before going to the museum, but either way, it's worth a visit if you're looking to kill an hour (if that).

We don't have kids, but we can imagine they would be bored in the museum.

“A great little history of the Bennett Studio and the Dells of a century ago.”
Reviewed August 6, 2011

First of all, I knocked this down one star because it can be hard to find parking near it. The Studio is on the main drag through town. The Studio is an island of quiet compared to the the nearby hurly-burly tourist attractions. There is no food available on site but there are plenty of restaurants nearby.

The Studio shows some of the history of photography, and the history of the Dells around the turn of the century (1900s). There is some touristy stuff in the front but once past that, the rest is excellent and educational. See the original studio, check out the stereo pictures and see a unique slice of life. You can easily spend an hour (more if you want to do it justice) exploring the place. Some of the exhibits are hands-on.

Check out their web site (http://hhbennettstudio.wisconsinhistory.org/) for more information, hours, etc.

“A nice place.”
Reviewed August 10, 2010

This place makes you appreciate the Dells alot more. There are alot of interesting exhibits with alot of pictures and displays to look at. There is alot of reading, so don't expect everything to be presented on TV screens (they do have these though). I'd definetly recommend this attraction to anyone interested in history and looking to get away from the tourists for an hour.
