Chula Vista Resort
Ranked #53 of 75 Hotels in Wisconsin Dells
Reviewed April 3, 2007

WOW! Back from a one night stay at the Chula Vista, and let me start of by saying if you aren't familar with the Dells you may have some difficulty getting there. The hotel isn't by places like the Kalahari, and Great Wolf Lodge, but in the long run that's better.

We arrived at about 12:30 and got our suite right away, we had a Presidential Fireplace Suite, and it was absolutely amazing! It had a king bed as well as a sofa bed, it had 2 TV's in the Living Room and 1 TV in the Bedroom. This suite had a Fireplace, a wet bar, a kitchen table, two lazy chairs, two decks, and More!!

After we had our room we went down to the Coyote Mountain, this was a waterpark that was in our building but it was smaller than Lost Rios (the new and big waterpark). There is an underground tunnel that joins the building and the waterpark, so you don't have to go outside.

The waterpark was awesome!! Lots and lots of fun everywhere you go. The action river (lazy river with waves), gave us lots of stuff to do and lots of memories were created here. When you go you have to try at least 2 rides, the Flyin Myan and Jungle Adventure.

The Flyin Myan is a watercoaster that has belts that spin and carries the tube up and around the coaster. We asked the attendent how fast it actually goes, and he said the top speed was 33 MPH.

Jungle Adventure was a surprise to us, you get in your tube and press one of the 3 buttons on your right. These buttons change the music and colors of the lights inside the ride. Once the display reaches zero, you take off down the ride and immediately drop down the tube, then you fly into a bowl where you ride around around until you go down the tube and exit the ride, the whole time lights and music are playing in the bowl.

If you have never been to the Chula Vista Resort you need to go!!!

Wonderful weekend getaway. Our family booked a 3 bedroom condo for our weekend getaway. This group included five kids and 9 adults, ages 9-71!
Pros
The condo was great. Everything was very clean, and well decorated. There was even a large jacuzzi in the room! There was a full kitchen complete with dishes, silverware, cookware, dishwasher, oven/stove, microwave, and full fridge. It was nice to have room for all of us to be centralized, vs. every couple booking their own seperate room, and in the long room this was actually the less expensive option. We opted for the room 'without a view', which was actually more convenient as it was closer to the parking lot. Unfortunaley, it was a rainy weekend, otherwise we could have enjoyed the path that runs along the river, quite pretty! I had read other complaints about housekeeping in the condo area. We found the staff to be very helpful, they stopped by while we were still in the room and they provided clean towels and changed the garbage bags, they were very friendly. The rooms were very quiet, we never noticed any outside noise. Overall, very satisfied with the rooms.

Cons
While we were very happy with the condo, we did notice room for improvement with the rest of the resort, although it was overall a great experience. The first thing we noticed is that parking is a mess. People are parked anywhere and everywhere, likely because otherwise you will park a long ways away. Perhaps this is because of recent construction, and the fact that it was a spring break weekend (hotel was booked). Anyways, be prepared for that. The new indoor water park is actually a seperate building. There is an underground tunnel that goes under the parking lot to the waterpark. Unfortunately, there are not many signs on the condo side of the resort, which was a bit frustrating. Luckily some members of our group had memorized the map and knew how to get over there or it would have been a lost cause.

The waterpark was nice sized. Even though it was a super busy weekend, it wasn't annoyingly crowded. We did notice that they could use some additional innertubes for the tube slides as you end up waiting for people to come off the slide and hand you their tube (vs. at other places that usually have a stack of them for you). Again, lack of signs was a problem. It was hard to know where to go for what, what slides needed tubes, etc. But after a couple of runs you get the hang of it. Perhaps it's the time of year, but it seemed as though they could have had more people working, it makes me nervous that there weren't always lifeguards directing the slides and sometimes it was up to people in line to watch for others to get done or wait for the green light. Overall the waterpark did provide a lot of entertainment. My major issue, and some of this is parental responsibility (and actually some parents were guilty of this too) was that the lazy river seemed to be used for a swimming pool with little kids running around, diving under tubes etc. It was hard to relax and float when you were afraid you'd trap a kid underneath you. I have seen at other water parks that you can only go in the river if you are on a tube, I would suggest they implement that policy. We never did get around to checking out the older indoor water park, but heard that had a nice hot tub.

Overall
Overall our experience was great. While there were a few things that could be improved, there was nothing that put a damper on our trip. The whole family had a wonderful time and we will definately be planning another trip next year!

The Chula Vista resort has a lot to offer. It is in the final stages of a major renovation that includes a brand new waterpark and new condos. My family of six had a enjoyable three night stay. The property seems to be in a state of transition and needs improvement in the food and beverage department. If you are planning a stay I would recommend the condos. The regular rooms are quite dated and worn.

Pros
A waterpark that is clean and well staffed with comfortable seating. Eight different waterslides that kept all 4 boys happy. Dry towels were always available.

Beautiful brand new condos. Comfortable beds with nice linen and pillows. Fully equiped granite kitchen and baths. Nice view of the Wisconsin river and shoreline.

A terrific Steak house "Kaminski Brothers". (A separate part of the general dining in the resort.)

Cons

The resort dining in understaffed without apparent supervison. Much of the help has English as a second language. The main (and only) restaurant is under construction and is a buffet. Service is chaotic and the food is mediocre at best. We were a part of the all inclusive
plan. I would not choose this again. Management should wake up and add some sort of flexibility to dine at Kaminski brothers under this plan.

Check in took at least 45 minutes. Long lines. Short staffed. Unavailable rooms. Front desk personnel with poor people skills.

My boyfriend and I just returned home from our stay at the Chula Vista. Upon arriving and checking in we were informed that they had upgraded us to a condo with no extra charge. This was a very pleasant suprise. Our room contained two queen beds that were very comfortable and a sofa. The view out of our room was my boyfriends favorite part. Our room looked out onto the river and you could here the water from our room...it was great. The new indoor waterpark was also a huge plus. I have been on many waterslides in my day and love most of them but these slides were unique and better than those at the Kalahari. It was also off season while we were there so there were very few people at the resort. All in all we had an amazing time, a very relaxing much needed get away!

Chula Vista Resort was very over-rated.
As mentioned in the previous review~only one indoor waterpark was open and the biggest draw~the indoor roller-coaster..CLOSED!
The food was awful, cold and unpalatable. When we ordered off the menu as opposed to the buffet. The food was no better, I had the shrimp which was described by COLLOSAL SHRIMP, well they were not that big and there were only 4 of them! My friend had the NY strip steak and said that was not that great either.
The drinks were watered down (I suppose you should expect that with an all inclusive deal).
The room was really on the smallish side (in my opinion). We did have a balcony though...it faced the parking lot!
When we first arrived much to our chagrin~ there was a Lutheran Youth group there. There was 800 of them in the floors right above ours! They were rude, disruptive and loud.
For 2 people 2 nights we paid about $500.00~I think that was a little ridiculous. But we did not know what to expect and thought "What the heck, we would splurge a little" Big Mistake!
How wrong we were.

My family and another family stayed at the Chula Vista for a weekend getaway. We go to the Dells a few times a year and decided to try the Chula Vista for a change. (Usually stay at The Great Wolf Lodge) We very much regretted our stay there. The rooms were ok, pretty standard, we did upgrade for a balcony with a view. The view is very nice. The worst was the hotel personel. The only restraunt open that weekend was the masa grill. (dinner $18.95 a plate) buffett style. Food was terrible and not even warm. Very dissapointing meal and when my husband reported our dismay to the staff, he was brushed off. The hotel is way out of town, very secluded (which is nice) however, if you want something simple like a bagel for beakfast, you can only get it through room service for about $7.50 after the room charge. My daughter was ill the last morning we were there and I went down to the buffet restraunt and asked if I could just purchase some toast or a bagel for her and they would not budge, I had to pay the buffet price for just a piece of toast. There was a Starbucks near the lobby, they suggested I try there. They had 2 donuts available and the lady working the counter said they were being thrown out because they were stale. They had nothing else but coffee. The hotel staff brushed every issue we had off, weren't able to help resolve any issues, even the minor ones. We felt rather "unwelcome here". If going to the Dells, I would recommend The Great Wolf Lodge before The Chula Vista. The staff is much more on top of things and there are many more options for the guest. Perhaps the Chula Vista is better run during their in season. They also had closed one of their 2 indoor waterparks, which was not disclosed to us prior to our stay. The children were dissapointed in that. The drive to town is a long one. This resort should better be able to accommadate it's guests, especially being that it is an all inclusive resort.
