We stayed here 2 nights January 22nd and 23rd, 2012 on the Great Escape Package. We booked it a couple months ago and thought it would be a great deal having all the food, drinks and waterpark passes included in the hotel price. Let me tell you about our stay...
This resort is about 3 miles outside of town, which in the winter is not a big deal as not much is open in the Dells. When we arrived at the resort we were really not sure where to go as they don't have any signs telling you were to check in. We went to what we thought was the check in but it was for the condo desk check in. The woman at the desk told us that we were in the wront place and we had to go to the next building to check in. No problem we thought. When we got to the correct place the check in line was very minimal. We were able to check in early at 3:00 pm. They only had one room clean but the front desk clerk was very nice and said that she would text us as soon as the other room was ready and the 4 of us would be in rooms next to each other. I asked what floor we where on because I hate to be on the first floor. She said we where on the first floor but she checked to see if they had any other rooms next to each other on other floors, which they did not unless we wanted to upgrade. Then she said our room was not really on the first floor anyway and that it was actually on the 2nd floor because of the way the North Tower sits. Hmmm. First we are on the 2nd floor then we are not? Whatever not a big deal. She gave us our waterpark bands but said that when the other room was ready we all would have to come back down and show our ID to get the wristbands for the food and drinks. We asked if we will have to wait in line when we get back and she said that the resort usually sets up a seperate area to give us the other wristbands so we won't have to wait to long. So we go load our stuff into our room which is indead a"1st floor room". The room itself was dated. The North Tower looks older than the rest of the resort. The bathroom has the toilet and shower and the vanity is out in the entryway. Room seemed clean. We had a king room with a sofa. The TV is old and has the big red line on the top and the color is way to red. We had a microwave and a mini fridge too. The bed had pretty nice bedding and overall the room was what I would rate a 2 star. Nothing special.
Since our friends room wasn't going to be ready for another hour we walked around the resort and checked out the waterpark. They have an underground walkway lined with lots of fake flowers and plants. Also in the walkway is lots of video games and chairs. We rarely saw anyone else down there so we thought it was weird go have all those chairs down there. We walked through the waterpark and thought it was small but lots of slides in one area. Also a nice little "Tiki Hut" for the bar area.
We went back to the front desk to see if the other room was ready. Wow what a shock when we saw lines of people waiting everywhere. We went in the "Will Call" line and asked if they had our other room ready and had not received a text yet. They were very busy but gave us the other room key and said to get the other wrist bands we would have to go wait in the other line. We waited in the other line for 1/2 hour to get our other wristbands. When my husband tore off his old one the clerk told him he was going to have to go back in wait in the other line to get a new one. You have got to be kidding me! Then the clerk next to him said that was wrong and we only needed to wear the one bracelet. So we go back to our rooms to find that our rooms are not together afterall! AHHH. This was not turning out to be a good first impression.
The food included is only at the buffet and the give you a voucher for each meal so you can't just come and eat whenever you want. Each time we asked one of the resort staff what time the meals were served we got a different answer. Food overall was not that bad. Standard buffet food. One other thing to keep in mind is it's first come first serve so when the restaurant is full you have to put your name down and they call you when a table is ready. I noticed they have the same workers for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They work really hard.
After dinner we got into our suits and decided to head to the outdoor hot tub. We asked the woman in the gift shop where it was and she didn't know. We found it on our own and really enjoyed that area. They do need to salt or sand the walkway as it was really slippery when you are walking in flip flops! Big hot tub that seats around 30. They also have a nice outdoor fireplace.
They have two bar area's in the resort. One in the waterpark and one by the buffet. If you want to get a drink on the Great Escape Package you will have to wait 1/2 hour at least. It's so packed and busy. This leads to people drinking 2 to 3 drinks at a time. This leads me to the next problem. Lots of drunk people here. People in the hallways, sitting in chairs ourside of the bar, in the hallways and just about everwhere. We saw security quite often at the resort.
We spent the afternoon at the waterpark. No long lines and enjoyed the slides. The rollercoaster is great as is the toilet bowl slide. Again if you want a drink here you will have to wait at least 1/2 hour. With 2 bartenders they could not keep up. They even make the bloody mary's from scartch which just takes way to long. Not very effecient. Again we saw lots of drunk people here. Also people smoking cigars and cigarettes in the hot tub. No one monitering out there.
The 2nd day we came back to our room that had been cleaned but we were out of toilet paper.
I used kleenex but after one tissue that was out too. We thought no big deal we would just call the front desk. We called but the number was busy and busy and busy. Then we called zero for housekeeping or if you have a FIRE in your room! That should get someone to answer so they can bring us some TP! Nope...13 minutes on hold and finally someone picked up. They brought it to us within 15 min.
1-need to train their staff better, not familiar with the facility
2-need more bar staff to keep up
4-all staff need to be on the same page
Overall I would not stay here again. I would stay at the Great Wolf or Kahlahari and pay a little more but not have the drunks and get a little nicer room and waterpark.
