We had stayed here 25 years ago in the original inn before it burned down. So when it came time for our 25th wedding anniversary we decided to return to the Holiday Inn and Wash Is. We had a great time on the island, but Findlay's was a huge disappointment. Its not bad per se. But its not good.
The main lodge rooms (the "expensive" ones) are small, with unsupportive pillows, tiny (13"?) TV's, and in our case (#16) only three shallow drawers for 2 people for 4 days in the bottom of the tv cabinet. They have 8 "lakeview" rooms in the main lodge. Only four of which have unobstructed views of the lake. We were put in #16 on the second floor, and at least 2/3rds of the "lakeview" was obstructed by trees. So avoid rooms #14 - 17 if a lakeview is important to you. The view however was academic, since the seal between the panes of our window must have failed at some point, so the air conditioner kept the window continuously fogged (on the outside) during our stay.
The owner's daughter and her children seemed to be nearly continuously camped out in and around the lobby which was the only place we could connect to the internet. Indeed, I was driven out of there at one point when one of the children decided to have a screaming fit. I don't live and die to be online, but I do need to check in on the outside world. Regardless, even if I only wanted to sit in the lobby and do nothing, a paying guest should not have to compete with the owner's family for use of the facilities for which he has paid.
Speaking of paying, NOTHING except the coffee was complementary, Two examples. I was offered a donut the first morning only to be told as I thanked them and reached for it that that would be 65 cents. Even the jar of mints sitting on the reception desk was labeled 5 cents each. None of this is a big thing by any means. But it is indicative of the ownership's attitude toward their guests.
Indeed, I informed them when I made our reservation that Tuesday would be our 25th wedding anniversary. I don't expect anything special (though if offered of course its nice), but I at least expect a "Happy Anniversary" from someone on the staff at some point during our stay. Instead absolutely nothing!
When we checked out I wasn't even asked how was our stay, and In fact, had to correct our bill reminding them that they had offered us a discount for staying 4 nights. They said that they had forgot because we we the first couple this year who had stayed with them for four nights. Hmmm!!!
