“Did Genghis Khan Discover America?”
Reviewed August 17, 2014

When I first saw the Stavkirke - and the similar structure near the Historic Island Dairy - I thought that the Mongols must have discovered America ... that Genghis Khan had either stowed away on Christopher Columbus' ship or was the cabin boy. That's the impression I got from the pagoda like appearance of both buildings, with their wide cowhorns and the heads of yaks and strange fish heads (which turned out to be dragon heads). Naturally enough, I supposed that the Mongols had landed on Washington Island years ago and left these strange buildings as their legacy,

Go check out this strange puzzle for yourself! Do so as you trudge along the adjoining Prayer Path wondering about what in God's name it all means. Remember to say a little prayer for Genghis.

“Peaceful site”
Reviewed August 16, 2014 via mobile

I keep thinking the Stavkirke is old, but it's not - it was built in the nineties. Despite that, it is such a beautiful and tranquil place, and I can see it being a good place to meditate. The architecture is interesting, seemingly simple, but not.

“Not to be Missed”
Reviewed August 10, 2014

Our first trip to the Door Peninsula included a visit to Washington Island. Driving around, seeing the sights - very rural and almost old world - included a stop at this site. What a wonderful treat to see and appreciate the thought and work that have gone into this structure. A beautiful, spiritual spot. Take the time to find it - you won't be sorry!

“Gorgeous architecture”
Reviewed August 6, 2014

This beautiful, hand built place of worship is a must see on Washington Island. Inside and out the details are incredible and the grounds are equally striking. There was a tour group inside when we got there and we got to listen to the guide's explanation of the history. A very peaceful place.
