“Worst trolley tour ever”

Washington Island Ferry Line

Thinking that the Washington Island would not be that great to take a car, we bought the package ferry/train tour. Washington Island Ferry has far fewer trips to the island than the other vendor that has both car and tourist travel. The ferry ride was fine, but they don't operate on a strict time schedule at all. The trolley tour was atrocious. It is impossible to get around the island without a vehicle--it's 27 miles around. Attractions are far apart. The trolley was fast, fast, fast with little or no time to actually see anything. We stopped the longest at a True Value Hardware store that sold fudge. That was about 20 minutes. We then had a 10 minute stop at a wooden church--hurry, hurry, hurry and take your pictures!!! Then we stopped at a charming little farm museum--15 MINUTES!!!! There was a lot to see there and we would have loved to have had another hour to look at the machinery, pictures and view the 13 minute video. We stopped for a grand total of 10 minutes at Schoolhouse beach. It was lovely but throw a couple of rocks for luck, take two pictures and hurry the hell up and get back on that uncomfortable trolley. There were several restaurants on the island but we didn't get to stop and get that lunch--no, way, Jose--no time for that! We ate peanuts for lunch. When we were deposited back on the deck, we decided to wait 1 1/2 hours for the next ferry and eat lunch. The rather rude driver told us there was a restaurant near the next dock where the car ferry docks. We ate pizza, bought from a very nice man. It was good. We also had time to go into a Swedish store and shop for 15 minutes.
I would not waste my time going to Washington Island unless you take your car on the ferry. Take your bathing suits and a picnic--and spend a couple of hours exploring the island and then go swimming. Otherwise--spend the time on the peninsula. We could have gone on a Wine Tour, visited several museums, state parks, nature preserves or beaches--and had plenty of wonderful places to eat!

My wife and I, along with out three grandchildren (6, 8, and 11), rode the ferry over to Washington Island and back. The grandchildren had never been on any kind of ship before so it was fun for them while not being so long that it was boring.

Washington Island is fun to do once - probably don't need to go back after that. We took our car across on the ferry. Note - this is almost an entire day trip, since we had to wait in line to board the ferry and, since there were so many cars, we had to wait for two ferry trips before we got on. On the way back, we headed to the dock early and only had to wait for one. Once over on the island, you feel like you went back in time to the 1960's. Schoolhouse Beach is the best thing to see. The mountain tower gives you a great view, and the farm museum is worth spending 10 minutes at. Other than that, not much to do. My kids thought the ferry rides were the best part of the day.

We spent several days in Door County and it's almost necessary to make the trip over to Washington Island. This ferry line runs many trips a day vs. the other line which has less than 1/2 as many trips. Makes it much easier to come and go as you wish. Boat was clean, employees friendly, and had both outdoor and indoor seating. Would use this line again. You will probably want to take the Cherry Train Tour of the island as well, unless you drive your car on the ferry to have it on the island. A discount combo ticket for ferry and Cherry Train Tour can be purchased.

Our family with teens took our bikes on the Ferry to Washington Island. It was a fun afternoon trip. We biked to town and had a great lunch at Nelsons. So glad we did it. Take layers because the ferry ride can be cook if there is a breeze on the lake. Fantastic views of the islands.
