“Not so much Family Friendly, as only suitable for Family's”
Reviewed February 13, 2006

I stayed at Barker's Island last March with friends. After the Edgewater in Duluth lost our reservation they were the only hotel that had vacancies, although we did have to become members of the wedding party (but that's another story).

The first room we were given (non snoking, two double beds) had already been assigned to a guest. So, back at the front desk the clerk upgraded us to a poolside suite for no extra charge.

The rooms are your standard remote Canadian/US upgraded in 1984 older carpeting, bedding, wall art, abused bathrooms, wood composite furniture fare. Which was expected, and well deserved for $60 a night.

However, after returning from shopping less than an hour later the hotel pool, lobby, and corridors were full of kids and families. This wasn't unusual, except for the volume of children and parents. The pool and surrounding area was packed until 10 PM, when it suddenly emptied and for the remaining hour that the pool was open, we enjoyed a swim and soak in peace.

Also, Barker's Island is in Superior, which for those who haven't visited is located across the river/channel from Duluth. 95% of the local attractions and entertainment is in Duluth, especially the Canal Park area. You'll therefore need to schedule 15 minutes to travel from the hotel to the Omnimax, Grandma's, Depot, Red Lobster, etc... and it takes about a half hour to reach Miller Hill Mall.

This is a great hotel for kids/families/grandparents, but probably a pass for those of us between 20 and 35.

We just returned from a 3 night stay at Barkers Island Inn, in Superior, only a few miles, and an awesome ride over the Bong bridge or Blatnik Bridge, to Duluth, Minnesota, on Lake Superior. We had planned a short vacation with our 6 year old and 19 month old, to Duluth, Minnesota. Cost is always a consideration for us. My husband, who works for AAA, found this hotel in a AAA travel book. Booking our stay from Sunday to Wednesday, we found an incredible deal...better even than the AAA discount we had expected to use. For $59.99 (plus tax) a night, we got the standard hotel room, 2 full beds, a king or queen, etc. We chose the 2 beds. Without having to ask, we were offered a crib and a refrigerator at no extra charge ("you'll want a crib and probably a refrigerator, too, right?) Wonderful. We were slightly wary of these accomodations. The hotel offers a website (---) but there are very few user reviews to be found. We did find 3 that deemed the place great for families and posted no bad comments, so we went with it. We were prepared for anything! Since booking a "great deal" for a hotel room in Chicago at the Congress Hotel (do NOT ever stay there), that turned out to be anything but a great deal--dirty, smelly, AWFUL! We easily found the hotel in relatively small Superior, and saw what looked to be a fairly old, but decent looking establishment. The hotel has two floors and is fairly spread out, but has multiple secure entrances. The front desk clerk directed us where to park closest to our room. Across from the front desk was the Galley restaurant and the hotel lounge. Down the hall was the pool, hot tub, sauna, and game room. So far, so good. Everything looked clean, updated, and very well-kept. We did find the hotel map to be frustrating and confusing, until it was explained to us that the first digit is ommited from the map, so it can be used for both the first and second floor. (We had been searching for room 152, but the map showed only 52....). That solved, we quickly located our room. It was not fancy and not a luxury suite,...but it was large, clean, and sure enough, our crib and refrigerator were already there. The hotel staff was friendly and accomodating--we had forgotten our hair dryer and the hotel provided us one free of charge. The refrigerator was a small "dorm" sized one, but had ample room for our milk, juice, soda, and snacks--mandatory supplies when traveling with young children. The crib was a Graco Pack 'n Play, exactly like the one we had at home. It was made up with a sheet and blanket, adorably, and our baby was given a stuffed animal as a free gift. We absolutely loved the pool and hot tub. The pool is 3ft on one end and 5 ft on the other, perfect for swimming with our 6 year old. We ended each evening there. We ate dinner one evening at the hotel restaurant. Food was great and the staff there was more than accomodating to us, with young children. Down the road from the hotel is a small, new, park area where you can tour a retired whale boat (ship) museum (for a fee), let your children play on new playground equipment, play miniature golf, and/or book one of many types of cruises on Lake Superior with Vista Cruises (we took a 1-1/2 hour cruise--very nice). Superior WI is next to Duluth, MN, where you can visit the 100 yr old aerial lift bridge, maritime museums, Zoo, skyline drive overlooking lake superior, watch huge ships travel through the canal, tour the floating museums of William Irvin ship and the Coast Guard's retired Sundew, and spend time walking, cycling, or riding in a horse drawn carriage around Canal Park. Canal Park offers many, many, quaint shops and lots of both familiar restaurant chains, and ones locally owned. This hotel delivered everything it promised and was perfect for what we needed. We will definitely stay at Barkers Island Inn again.
