“No Air Conditioning in Public Areas!”
Reviewed July 15, 2012

We stayed here for a wedding and the wedding was located behind the hotel so it was convienent in that sense. However, the temperature in Duluth and Superior was over 90 degrees (even next to the lake)! The air conditioning in the rooms worked fine but there was no AC in the hallways, lobby, bar or restaurant! It was absolutely horrible to even walk through the hotel to our room. We stepped into the bar from the horribly hot outdoor wedding hoping for some relief and unfortunately, the bar didn't feel different from the outside temp and was at the same humidity level.

I would agree with the previous reviews. The furnishings need to be updated and it would have been nice to have a microwave and refrigerator. Our room was clean however. There was no iron and ironing board in the room, but the front desk was quick to provide one when we asked. The only noise problems we encountered were people standing outside our room at 2 in the morning talking to each other. I did find the sheets to be scratchy. I even put a t-shirt over the pillow on the second night because it annoyed me so much.

It would have been nice to have complimentary breakfast but that did not happen. We ate one morning in the restaurant (would never have eaten a later meal because of it lacking AC). We had to wait almost ten minutes for a hostess to come and seat us, but the waitress was great and I highly recommend the french toast.

The only other problem was that Hwy. 53 was under construction and while we could make it to the hotel from Duluth without problem, in order to make it back to Duluth we had to be detoured through downtown to they Hwy. 2 bridge. This added about 10 minutes to every trip back and forth. This of course, is not the fault of the hotel!

Common amongst the previous reviews. Hotel desperately needs updating. Old furniture, old bedding, bed spreads circa the 70's. Hotel appears to have several additions over the years. However, with an overhaul, could be decent. The pro's: Neat location. Right on the harbor. Very friendly help - from the desk, to the bar to the breakfast. Bar is nice and overlooks harbor.
Likely won't stay here again until they freshen the place. Would be a waste if they didn't make one last run at it.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the bay or harbor would be an upgrade !

Very neglected, needs major renovations. The mattress was thin and lumpy, the bedding almost see-through. The bathtub had chips out of it and the walls needed re-plastering. My husband and I walked into the room, looked around and checked back out. We drove back to Duluth and stayed in the Comfort Inn West which is a far superior motel.

Room Tip: Take a look at your room before you decide to stay

We stayed in the captains suite, never again! Check in was ok, when we were walking to our room there was an odor in the hallway. In the room there was only one light switch, the wallpaper was bubbling and pealing, toilet stained, out dated furniture, when you turned the Jacuzzi on the lights got really low,so we didn't use. There was no not water in bathroom sink and no water at the sink in the kitchenette. I will never stay There again!!!

Room:

We stayed in a second floor double queen bed room facing the pool. First off, even though the room is facing the pool, there is a hallway with glass windows that separates the room from the pool area - this DRASTICALLY cuts down on the noise level. Even with 3 hockey teams sharing the hotel, noise was minmal (from the pool).

The room was dated... The carpets were old and stained and the fixtures (bed, tv's, A/C unit, lighting) all needed updating. The bathtub drain in our room was broken, so you had to hold up the switch for the plug up to drain the shower (which meant you were always showering in a pool). The A/C/heating unit looked like a model from the 80's and had a hard
time regulating the temperature in the room. The beds were well worn and hard. The room did have a fridge/microwave combo that were newer and worked well.

Pool Area:

The pool area was decent. It was clean and had plenty of seating for larger groups/familes to gather. The pool was nice (3'-5') and the hottub was actually hot. There is a communal shower room as you go into the sauna as well. A small games room (air hockey and video games) is also next to the pool area.

Front Desk:

The front desk ladies were always pleasant and helpful. When we arrived in town a few hours before check-in time, they allowed us to store our son's hockey equipment in the front office so we didn't have to tote it around town.

Restaurant:

Be advised there is *NO* continental breakfast offered at this hotel, as they have an onsite restaurant. Keep that in mind when booking your rooms as that inevitably adds $20+/night to your stay. Although we did not eat in the restaurant, the reviews of fellow teammates were all positive.

Overall, I would not stay here again... If the price was half of what we paid, I may consider it again. $90/night for an old, dated dirty room and no continental breakfast... I wasn't impressed.

My wife and I were on our way from Minnesota to Michigan and got caught in a huge snow storm. We stayed here thinking that we would find outstanding accommodations, based on the price, we were not really impressed. The rooms were, at the best, average. There was only limited internet connections. The restaurant closed at nine and that is when we showed up, on a Saturday, not acceptable. The lighting is terrible, the decor is old, room is small and I would have loved the place if it would not have cost us $100+ per night...
