Took a last minute trip up north. The Holiday had a room open, thank goodness! Staff was very pleasant. The room was quaint and retro, but more importantly it was clean. The mattress was comfortable and there were ample pillows. There was shampoo, conditioner, and soap provided. The continental breakfast was good. Overall we enjoyed our stay. Would stay again and recommend to friends and family.

My husband and I spent one night here and were totally disappointed. The motel and rooms are exactly as depicted on their website. No surprises other than the rooms are very very small.
The room was clean, exceptional bed, linens, etc. Small flat screen tv mounted on the wall.
The bathroom was good size, however being the 50's look the sink is free standing with no vanity. Very difficult to dry my hair and get ready to leave in the morning. There was no room to navigate in the morning with 2 of us in the room. No coffee maker but we had a refrigerator which hummed loudly so I unplugged it for the night.
The people are very nice but I feel the room is way overpriced for what it is. After driving around Sturgeon Bay and seeing other motels we could have stayed elsewhere for less money and had a better and larger room.
The halls have a musty odor like and old basement, not too welcoming. We would not stay again.

Thank you for your candid review.

We are very sorry that you were unhappy with your stay though we are very thrilled to know that you found your room “exactly as depicted” on our website, clean, staff friendly and “exceptional bed, linens, etc.”

Yes, per the architecture of the period, our rooms are a bit on the small side. We certainly do not advertise our rooms to be “spacious” and as is frequently mentioned in our reviews, people do find them a bit small though the charm and other comforts offered here seem to consistently outweigh this minor drawback as does the minimal shelving in the bathrooms (and for the record, we are exploring options to improve this issue for the future.)

In regards to your claim that we are “way overpriced”… For readers of this review, please know that we work very hard and pride ourselves on keeping our prices as low as possible, and competitively low in comparison for this area, though we spare no expense on high quality mattresses, linens, organic cotton towels, an extensive continental breakfast from 7am until noon, etc. We also do not require 2-night minimums or charge fees to make changes to reservations and even though we do require a 48-hour notice to cancel a reservation, the only time we've ever found it necessary to charge a guest for cancelling on short notice was if we had been turning people away and then found that we couldn't sell the room (which happens rarely.) We are very much about running a fair and honorable business and appealing to the average traveler that may not have deep pockets but still appreciates quality, clean, comfortable, friendly, etc…. and all right downtown in the heart of Sturgeon Bay.

I am a little confused that you say that you drove around Sturgeon Bay and saw other motels you could have stayed at for cheaper that had “better and larger” rooms. I just went to Trip Advisor and picked several dates randomly and listed hotels/motels in the area by price and time and time again, we were listed as one of the the least expensive, if not the least expensive. Unless one was actually able to visit each location to inquire about price and see the rooms, I would think it quite impossible to make such a proclamation.

In any case, of major concern to me, you mentioned a musty odor in our hallways and we’ve been going crazy trying to figure out what you are referring to. Everything has been restored here right down to the studs so the walls, floors, carpeting, paint is all new. Believe me, we are on high alert for anything that might be offensive ESPECIALLY when it comes to a musty odors that might indicate the buildup of moisture or a leak. I have been asking everyone I can if they can smell what you are referring to because I am highly concerned of a deeper issue that may require attention. Unfortunately, I have not yet found anyone that is able to identify anything remotely “musty” or like an “old basement.” Nonetheless, I am still going to pursue this issue for anything that may be the cause of what you are referring to. I am hoping that perhaps something may have come in from the outside—like damp leaves (as is ‘par for the course’ for this time of year) that made their way inside on shoes or luggage, for example—that caused this and thus would explain its current absence.

In regards to the noisy fridge in your room, I have not yet been able to locate which refrigerator you are referring to. If you have a moment to let me know what room you were in, I would most definitely make it point to get that appliance replaced.

For other readers of this review, we do have 3 rooms that have coffeemakers in them (229, 234 and 237) and for all other rooms, an in-room coffee maker is always available upon request. Most people usually opt to simply partake in the freshly brewed coffee available in our diner anytime day or night.

Again, we are very sorry that you were unhappy with your stay and that we won’t have the opportunity to have you stay with us in the future.

Recently stayed one night at the retro Holiday Music Hotel. We enjoyed the hotel and we found many more pros than cons (and the cons were really very minor concerns)!

PROS:
1. Very clean!
2 The two hotel clerks we interacted with could not have been more friendly and helpful - made every guest feel special!
3. Fun retro-decorated hotel
4. Great location to water and downtown Sturgeon Bay shops and dining
5. Very reasonable rates compared to other Door County properties and really appreciated that you did not need to have a typical 2-night stay.
6. Good free continental breakfast and again, clerk was very attentive -making sure good stayed stocked for guests. "Diner" area for breakfast was fun!
7. Comfortable bed

CONS
1. Room is quite small (but again - very clean and bathroom is very clean also)
2. TV mounted on wall was really, really tiny.
3. Noise: irritating and noisy small refrigerator - cycled loudly on and off all night; loud hall noise - just from people walking up and down hallway by room. Plus, lots of thumping heard overheard - again just from other guests above us moving around...guess it is simply related to an old building perhaps - but don't expect to sleep very well or very late if there are many other guests.

Would have loved to have been there when they had live music on site! Overall - great value and great service!

Holiday Music Hotel in July 2013. We loved the location, the staff was friendly and helpful, and it was a good experience taking our Labrador Retriever there. The hotel has a retro look, and has ben refurbished in an inviting manner. Would stay again.

It was like going back in time. The staff was absolutely fabulous. Several nice restaurants a short walk away (little bit pricey, but great food). Many locally owned stores. We are already planning on returning and staying here. Price was fair. Nice breakfast. Everyone in the town was friendly and helpful. I wish other motel owners would visit this place -- the owners really put some effort into making this place special. Very clean.
