Owner description: Door County Maritime Museum: Enjoy tales of bold ship captains, brave seaman, innovative shipbuilders, rugged fishermen, stalwart lighthouse keepers and much, much more--sea stories abound! The Door County Maritime Museum offers three unique visitor experiences. Its year-round 20,000 square foot flagship museum is located between the dowtown bridges on Sturgeon Bay's workking waterfront. It features four large exhibit galleries and the immaculately restored seagoing tugboat John Purves built in 1919. The iconic Cana Island Lighthouse, located Baileys Harbor, is a Door County treasure. The northern museum is a hidden gem featuring the classic wooden fish tug Hope. It is located in the historic fishing village of Gills Rock alongside the infamous "Death's Door" passage. Both are open seasonally.

It was awesome. The tour has the former senior engineer on the tug for 35 years or something.. Great piece of history..

Ahoy! We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your tour of the historic tugboat, John Purves. We are very proud of our big red tug! She's led a long and intersting life...happy that we can share her story with our visitors.

Enjoyed this place and learned a lot. we really had no previous knowledge about the shipbuilding and maritime history of the county. The staff wasn't the friendliest but we were there late in the season.

“Nice museum, worth visiting...”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

The Door County Maritime Museum is a very nice local museum. Located right on the water and very convenient with ample parking and nice grounds. The 5 gallery's offer several interesting exhibits, from the shipbuilding history of the area to local wood carvings, even a collection of antique outboard motors. all of the exhibits are well done and well maintained. When I was there they had a "Pirates" exhibit which was interesting and very suitable for children. I did not take the tugboat tour as time would not permit it but I'm sure it would have been worth the additional cost. Plan on a couple of hours and be sure to take in the view from the second floor balcony.

“Beautiful Maritime Museum”
Reviewed October 4, 2013

If you love boats you will love this museum. Several working boats on display outside, in the water, with tours available. The main building has many wonderful exhibits, models, and paintings. Great place for adults or children. In a beautiful setting on the ship canal in Sturgeon Bay.

They also operate a maritime museum at Gill's Rock, and at Cana Island Lighthouse. All three worth a visit.

Didn't realize how much I didn't know about boats. It was very nice to learn some of the history of the area. The tug boat tour was very cool. The tour guide was very informative and knowledgeable. It's a good educational experience.
