Owner description: Door County Maritime Museum: Enjoy tales of bold ship captains, brave seaman, innovative shipbuilders, rugged fishermen, stalwart lighthouse keepers and much, much more--sea stories abound! The Door County Maritime Museum offers three unique visitor experiences. Its year-round 20,000 square foot flagship museum is located between the dowtown bridges on Sturgeon Bay's workking waterfront. It features four large exhibit galleries and the immaculately restored seagoing tugboat John Purves built in 1919. The iconic Cana Island Lighthouse, located Baileys Harbor, is a Door County treasure. The northern museum is a hidden gem featuring the classic wooden fish tug Hope. It is located in the historic fishing village of Gills Rock alongside the infamous "Death's Door" passage. Both are open seasonally.

“Just dreadful”
Reviewed June 1, 2013

The museum is models of ships with explanation cards. I was so disappointed with this. Nothing authentic or real, just model ships. We went during the Titanic exhibit which we paid more for, and it was just large sheets of information hung up around the room. It was terrible and made such an interesting event, boring. I will not go back and I feel terrible saying it, but would not recommend anyone go. It needs to be called a model ship museum because that is all it is, model ships behind plexi glass with cards explaining what they are.

Thank you for taking the time to craft your review. We appreciate all feedback and do our best to use all visitor input to continually improve. We're obviously disappointed that you didn't enjoy your visit.

I'm a bit surprised that you feel that the museum offers only ship models. We are VERY proud of our ship model collection. It is one of the best in the country! However, the models are only one small part of the museum. Did you visit the lighthouse room? How about our new "Pirates--Ship to Shore" exhibit? We are thrilled to include an extensive collection of artifacts on loan from museums in Florida and North Carolina from shipwrecks along the eastern seaboard during the "golden age of piracy". Did you get a chance to visit the pirate ship Fortune and battle a few enemy vessels on the interactive gun deck? What did you think of our two feature art exhibits? "The Lighthouse Show", a collection of lighthouse paintings all done by local Door County artists, and "Pirates" by famed Florida artist Don Maitz. Did you get a chance to take in the port of Sturgeon Bay through our working submarine periscope? What did you think of the feature video on the amazing WWII shipbuilding boom here in Sturgeon Bay?

Again, thanks much for your review. We hope you'll stop back by during our upcoming feature exhibit on the maritime woodcarvings by local artists Pudge and Mary DeGraff. The new exhibit opens in July...it a fun and interesting exhibit, especially for folks from Sturgeon Bay who knew Pudge and Mary.

“We go back every time....”
Reviewed May 30, 2013

We have been to Door County many times, and the Maritime Museum is always on our list of things to do. We stopped here the first time because it was rainy, and we needed something to dry to do, but have been back many times since, rain or shine! My husband enjoys learning about the shipbuilders, the warships, and the shipwrecks, while I love the lighthouse information and exhibits. We both are amazed by the intricate ship models that are on display as well. I would really like to get back for the Door County Outdoor Painters exhibit this spring.

“Always a place we stop at....”
Reviewed May 16, 2013

The DC Maritime Museum is just a fun place to visit. We've toured the museum a few times, though we often stop just to check out the gift shop. They have a nice selection of books, including local history. They also have a nice selection of home decor and fun things for little ones.

“The weather was a little bad, so this is a great place to visit on the inside!”
Reviewed May 16, 2013

I love history and lighthouses, so this is a great place to visit (even if the weather is bad!)! I had friends visiting from Germany so this was a great place to stop. They do have the Fresnel light from Sherwood Point Lighthouse in the museum (fourth order) and are always great to see up close. It's hard to believe that these were shipped from France in the late 1800's and that how little lumens it required to send out the light. There is a demonstration that shows the young student how the light is refracted to warn the sailors.
