Owner description: Door County Maritime Museum: Enjoy tales of bold ship captains, brave seaman, innovative shipbuilders, rugged fishermen, stalwart lighthouse keepers and much, much more--sea stories abound! The Door County Maritime Museum offers three unique visitor experiences. Its year-round 20,000 square foot flagship museum is located between the dowtown bridges on Sturgeon Bay's workking waterfront. It features four large exhibit galleries and the immaculately restored seagoing tugboat John Purves built in 1919. The iconic Cana Island Lighthouse, located Baileys Harbor, is a Door County treasure. The northern museum is a hidden gem featuring the classic wooden fish tug Hope. It is located in the historic fishing village of Gills Rock alongside the infamous "Death's Door" passage. Both are open seasonally.

“Interesting exhibits”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2012

This was the 2nd year in a row I've gone, and the changing exhibits are really well done. Plan on spending at least an hour if you're going for a specific exhibit, more if you want to explore the entire museum.

“Ok, but nothing "special"..”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2012

The museum was interesting. It has some hands on displays, some nice antiques and artifacts, but nothing that really makes you want to come back. The Tug boat tour was about the best thing, in my opinion..

Ahoy! Thanks much for the review--we value all feedback from our visitors. Wonderful to hear that you enjoyed your tour of the historic tugboat John Purves--it's a truly unique experience! We hope you had a chance to spend some time in our new "Pirates--Ship to Shore" exhibit and try your hand at sinking a ship or two with the cannons aboard the pirate ship Fortune. And did you find the working submarine periscope in the WWII exhibit? Again, thanks for the review and we hope you'll check out our other museum facilities in Gills Rock and at the Cana Island Lighthouse.

“Truly enjoyed the tour!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2012

I toured the tug John Purves last year and brought my dad this year for his birthday. Dad loved the tour and history. We had the added benefit of having the son of John Purves as our tour guide. Not only did we get history and information about the renovation of the tug, but we got to hear a lot of stories about when his dad worked for the Roen Steamship Company. Very cool!
There are some steep stairs going downstairs. One of the people on the tour had knee problems and could not see the engines down there, but she was able to check out the captain's quarters, galley, and the wheelhouse.
If you are in to history (lots of models and videos and pictures) the museum is quite enjoyable. The "Pirates" gallery was interesting. There are some kid-friendly pieces to it -- my dad (70) and I (41) enjoyed the video game where we got to man a cannon and try to blow a ship out of the water. The Titanic display was small but very informative. I learned a lot of information I had no idea about regarding the Titanic.

Ahoy! Thanks for the great review...we're thrilled that you enjoyed your tour of the historic tug John Purves. She is really a gem and looks pretty darn good for a vessel built in 1919! Hope you came away with a feel for what life is like on a large sea-going tug.

“Mostly Models”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2012

We hoped to see more ship artifacts and such, but the museum was made up of mostly mdoels and signs to read with some videos. It wasn't overly enjoyable for children, except the pirate area that was open while we were there. Our favorite part of the museum was the working periscope that we could see our hotel from!

Ahoy! Thanks for the review...we are always interested in the insights of our visitors. Great to hear that your children enjoyed our new "Pirates--Ship to Shore" exhibit. In addition to a host of artifacts from the golden age of piracy, visitors of all ages enjoy the opportunity to dress like a pirate, visit our pirate villiage and man the guns on our miniture pirate ship. We're also glad you enjoyed our working periscope...it is seriously cool! Hope you got a chance to explore our shipwreck kiosk, interactive "Lyle Gun" exhibit and spend a little time learning about the Door Peninsula's many ligthouses in our lighthouse room. Again, thanks for the review.
